Fernando Torres’ latest comments about his Liverpool future are quite simply unacceptable and come at a time when the Rafael Benitez/Tom Hicks storm seemed to be passing. Torres said: "Benitez has created a team of people who are indebted to him. It's certain if he goes many players will think about their futures.” That may be the case, but Torres should not be saying it in public under any circumstances. Furthermore, his comments come at the worst possible time: the Benitez/Hicks storm seemed to be passing, the team had responded in the best possible way, the club was refocusing and everything was settling down. Torres’ divisive comments will just whip up the media frenzy again and focus media attention on something that has brought shame on the club in recent weeks. ‘Torres is basically saying that the players play for Benitez and not the club. This is not the way it should be. First and foremost, players should be playing for the glory of Liverpool.’Simple support in the press along the lines of ‘we back the manager and will do our best’ is fine, as Peter Crouch illustrated with his recent comments. “It’s not for me to say who is right or wrong in this situation. What goes on in the boardroom is not our concern. We will keep trying to get results that will keep the manager safe,” said Crouch. Making a statement that is tantamount to holding the club to ransom is a mistake, and Torres is playing a dangerous game. After all, who pays his wages? It is not Benitez, that's for sure.No player or manager is bigger than the club, I don’t care who it is. Torres is a superb player and he has been a revelation for Liverpool. However, this does not give him the right to try to exert pressure on the owners through the media in the form of an ‘if he goes, we go’ ultimatum.

Jaimie, a few days ago you criticised Gerrard for not coming out and openly backing Rafa and now you are having a go a Torres for doing the opposite. You just can't help yourself can you. Still a sad loser. More interested in the gossip than the games. Go and write for woman's weekly will you.

by Paula Moss on December 03, 2007
This is such an over the top reaction to what amounts to a warm show of support from a young guy who left his boyhood club, put his faith in Rafa and has not looked back since coming here. Add to that he can hardly speak a word of English and this report amounts to alarmist over reaction. Torres professionalism is beyond question. He handled himself brilliantly during the transfer from Athletico. You'd be asking too much of him to manage cultural and language difficlties in what is and has been a very difficult situation all round. He's just a boy - give him a break

This website has to be the least informed and intelligent football site ever. Whilst I understand that volume of traffic helps you with ad revenues and that websites aren't free to run, I can't stand the way every single article seems designed to get a click but not to retain any readership. Either start writing properly or you'll be another flash in the pan, c ya on the dotcom trash pile. R U B B I SH.

Nearly wet myself laughing at this piece of alarmist tripe. Same thing as Mark. Damned if you don't (your Gerrard story) damned if you do. (this tripe about Torres). At the same time I want to thankyou. You ve finally broken the spell. I don't care how alarmist / sh** stirring / negative / overtly confrontational (etc etc) the headlines are for sportingo. I for one will never be clicking on another link as I never want to read another of your supposedly "just giving your opinion" while at the same time just trying to stir the sh**. Good bye Jaimie. I never enjoyed any of your articles. I still think you are actually a Man U fan.

Jamie, whilst I understand your concerns in regards to feeding the Media Frenzy surrounding the weeks events around Mighty Anfield, Torres is the last man you should be pointing blame at. What he has shown is that there is a unity there between the management and players, that we was led to believe didn't exist. I have read recent articles about how Benitez has no relationship with his players, and these comments by Torres has blown that theory right out of the water. If those words came out of Torres' mouth, then granted, he could have chosen better, however, as suggested before me, I think it is another case of a players statement being taken out of context. Lets not jump on his back like he is a criminal, in fact I would welcome a similar show of support from Rick Parry (Not suggesting he should threaten to leave, but he has been remarkably quiet through all of this. Lets focus on the positives. Torres could have stayed quiet, even if Benitez gets sacked, and picked up his wage packet all the sam

As others have said, it's a hypocritical article. Back Rafa/don't back Rafa. What is more, I haven't actually seen Torres say this - I've only seen the same news articles that you copied this from. If you start believing everything you read, you are in trouble. If you were a real LFC fan, you wouldn't be propagating this Sun-style crap.

Just because Torres is flavour of the month and is well liked, 'fans' stick up for his comments. Fans are so fickle it's unbelievable. If Sissoko or Peter Crouch had said the same, they would have been slagged off till the cows come home. In fact, Crouch had the gall to say 'Rotation is frustrating' and hypocritical fans were on his back for MONTHS complaining about how he was 'moaning in the press'. Double standards as usual. Torres made a threat, simple as that: If you sack Rafa, top players will leave the club. It's a sad state of affairs when so called 'fans' are condoning this behaviour. Then again, these are the same 'fans' who got down on their hands and knees and kissed Steven Gerrard's a** when he tried to defect to Chelsea twice, so I'm hardly surprised.
by Jaimie on December 03, 2007
Then you are not a Liverpool fan. End of story. Torres shouldn't have said what he did, especially in the current climate. Just because he's new at Anfield is no excuse. As I said in my article, Torres is superb, and in my other articles I have had nothing but praise for him. However, I see all LFC players the same and judge them the same, unlike many fans who have their favourites and dish out their opinions accordingly. I don't care which Liverpool player said it or why - it's not right. Furthermore, the comment has not been taken out of context. It is what it is, so just live with it.
A player comes out says 'Back the manager or lots of players will leave' in public and NOT ONE sports writer/blog ANYWHERE seems to think such a comment is a problem. *That* right there is the problem - The implict acceptance of players holding their clubs to ransom in the press. They get away with it because fans and the media have made such behaviour ACCEPTABLE. Except it's not that simple. It's only acceptable when everyone's favourite players are rocking the boat. If it's an unpopular player, the knives come out. Such is the hypocrisy of modern fans...

The owners and Parry should have come out and said press speculation about Rafa being sacked was incorrect. They didn't and the silence had everyone worried. It was a very worrying period and such times call for drastic measures. I can't think of a more eloquent way of showing solidarity with the manager, solidarity that is shared by most fans, than saying if he goes we all go. One for all and all for one. I don't buy into the idea of supportng the 'club' no matter what happens either. I'm not saying we are in this situation yet but if the owners start behaving terribly and we need to get them out, then sometimes it is justifiable to temporarily stop buying shirts going to matches in order to get a change of ownership. My loyalty is to Liverpool football club and Rafa represents the traditions of this club more than Hicks Gillette and Parry. If they start messing him about, someone has to stand up to them. Sheep like Jaimie and that editor from liverpool-kop wouldn't understand that.

what you thought of the star wars prequels google "jaimie kanwar" and look for the aicn forum entries . Very funny to see an "adult" whine like a three year old about a movie and as for that script you wrote jaimie, it wasnt good enough to use as bogroll.
What you're basically saying is that it's okay for Liverpool players to hold the club to ransom in the press, and you justify by citing Parry et al's lack of action?! Great. So if the squad went on strike and refused to play until Rafa's future was assured, you'd think was okay too? It's not about who represents the club - the club as a philosophical entity is bigger than Parry, Gillet, Torres or whoever. Making threats in public is wrong and there is never any excuse for it, irrespective of who provoked/incited what. Torres' comments are not a way of showing 'solidarity' - It is just the opposite in that his comments are divisive. If there is an 'us against them' or 'back him or you lose us' attitude, how is that solidarity exactly?!
by Tom B on December 03, 2007
This site gets worse and worse. Ever been to Anfield Jaimie? Ever sat int he Kop? Nah, didn't think so, so you don't speak for any Liverpool fans except yourself. Rafa signed Torres, it is pretty obvious he wants to play for the manager. Torres isn't saying he doesn't want to play for this club just because Rafa would go, he is saying that the way it would be done would be not the trait of a club he wants to play for. Who can blame him? I know many seasie holders who have said that if the board sacked Rafa over this fallout, they would give up their seasie, and I am not far off that myself.

I had a caveat, which was we are not in that bad a position yet. However, if the owners behaviour gets even worse, imagine if they sacked rafa and sent ticket prices soaring or something of nature, i think a boycott of some sort would be justified. It is a hypothetical point becasue the situation isn't that bad yet, but I wanted to make the point that not all of us blindly support LFC no matter how the club is run and by who. I love Liverpool and if I feel it is not being run properly then I will make a stand to protect it's traditions, not turn up week after week like a sheep whilst it is sent to the gutter, and I would expect that to apply to the playing staff and all real fans. If they sack rafa they will show they are unfit to run the club and action to persuade them to leave would be justified. It would be short term pain for a long term gain.

Kanwar... do you honestly believe that Torres signed for Liverpool because of the former glory? Do you think many of the Spanish players have signed because of the club's history? Do you think modern day players give a damn about 20 year old history?? Torres has come out and spoken the truth which many so called supporters find hard to digest.

This idiot Shubhankar here and Jaimie at Sportlino basically raise the same issues..Now hear this: I have been a LFC supporter right after the treble winning season, when they started showing EPL in India, and the reason, Micheal Owen from France'98.So when Owen left for Madrid, I was torn between following him, and retaining my loyalties for the club, and guess what did I choose? SO yes, the club is bigger than the individual ,agreed. But when the individual is someone who symbolises the club much more than the owners or Parry, the time comes to stand up for what's right. Torres left everything behind in Spain, and came here to join LFC and if he associates LFC with Rafa, whats wrong in that? Rafa may not be LFC, BUT LFC sure is Rafa

I've made a terrible mistake I was wrong and I hold my hands up. I don't really support Liverpool at all or even follow football. I right whatever will get the most responses. I used to think this was great but over the past few weeks, my self respect has been completely eroded. I understand why you all hate me and get so angry as I hate myself for what I have become. I'd like to apologise to all real Liverpool fans for being a fake.

Torres stated a fact. If Rafa leaves, many of the players who are there because of Rafa will question their future. This is a fact - xabi, Momo, Torres, Reina, Lucas, Yossi - these players have all stated how much of an impact the presence of Rafa had on their decision to join Liverpool. Like it or not, over the years Liverpool have had managers whose personalities have driven the team. Jamiek quotes Shankly, and forgets that Shankly himself had the sort of presence that would lead players to back him over the folks in the board-room. In the end, Hicks and Gillett are not the club - backing Rafa over the Americans is not the same as putting Rafa ahead of the team. "There is a holy trinity in any football club: the fans, the players and the manager. The owners are only there to sign the checks" - Bill Shankly. I personally see nothing wrong with Torres' statement because he was simply stating a fact that the americans would do well to consider.
by Tara on December 03, 2007
said it merely in support for Benitez. Its pretty ture anyway and the fans would prefer to hear honest views from their players. You're just trying to get views i swear. stop criticising the team and focus on the good points; we're unbeaten in the league, have the joint best g/d, conceded the fewest goals, are in free-scoring mode and have a team for the future as well as a manager in which the players and fans trust. Get over yourself

I did not read FT comments but your article will create more mischief than the initial comments. We should all be saying that but your headlines makes the comments controversial. As for "who pays his wages", there will be shortage of wage payers if he moves on. So H&G need to understand they are not playing an American video game but dealing with real people with emotions but above all unquestionable loyalty to LFC!

Holding the club to ransom is never acceptable EVER, it doesn't matter who it is. Making excuses for Torres' comments is pointless highlights predictable fan favouritism and hypocrisy. We all know that if one of the unpopular players like Sissoko said such a thing, they'd be crucified. Just because it's Torres though, it's okay, because he's the current golden boy. Such comments are incompatible with the spirit of the club - and by 'club' I mean LFC as a philosophical and symbolic entity - Not Parry, Hicks and Gillete. Anyone who condones Torres' comments is not a real fan. End of story.
