There are three stand-out nominees for the job of England football captain - John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard. All three are captains of their respective club sides and all in the latter stages of their 20s. All three are ideal candidates but who should be given the armband on a full-time basis?
They have all captained their country at different times but only Terry was given it originally as a full-time job. As much as I admire the other two, I believe that Terry is and would be the best appointment Fabio Capello could make. Gerrard does seem to relish the role of club captain at Liverpool and Ferdinand is the same with Manchester United.
However, Ferdinand in particular has been known to be rather petulant and moody when things are not going his way. This, of course, is natural for a competitive sportsman yet when the choice is so close between the three then more emphasis is placed on scrutinising each individual's pros and cons. The missed urine sample in 2003 was one incident which puzzled many and Rio was banned for eight months. He has a string of speeding offences and was done for drunk-driving in 1997.
Ferdinand also courted trouble with his live on-air gaffe with Chris Moyles. He called Moyles a faggot after the chubby DJ asked him if he had to choose between Alan Smith and Paul Scholes, who would it be? The Moyles incident is funny and was completely blown out of proportion, mainly because Ferdinand is a high-profile player. It's ridiculous. If it had been Alan Carr or Eddie Izzard who had made such a comment, it would have been hilarious.
Gerrard's personal life has been one of misfortune. In October 2007, he was involved in a low-speed car accident, knocking down a ten-year-old boy. The child was not seriously injured and Gerrard visited him in hospital with a pair of signed football boots. Two months later. whilst playing an away fixture for Liverpool in the Champions League, his house was burgled. Very unfortunate.
All three have been there or thereabouts when a few drunken shenanigans have gone on. So what? They are young men enjoying themselves and they are of course loaded. Ferdinand is a joker in the pack and has learnt his lessons from incidents years ago. It's only his attitude on the park I would question at times, even though he is an imperious footballer with more natural ability than Terry.
Terry seems to be a better role-model and leader of teams than Ferdinand. Gerrard is different and inspires through some quite stunningly powerful midfield performances. He is a bit of a one-man band, though, and perhaps takes all of Liverpool's troubles on his shoulders and can't quite channel that passion properly at international level. Gerrard at times seems pre-occupied in an England shirt.
I won't really go into detail about their credentials as players as we all know how good they really are. England is very lucky to have such talented players. It is moulding them and finding the right formation and tactics that seems to be the stumbling block.
But I still think that John Terry just, and I mean just, edges out the other two.

You've got to be joking haven't you? Terry's a racist, party boy thug who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the captaincy. Lets remind a few people of his captain qualities: - Insulted American Tourists after 911 - the man who "allegedly" made a racist comment to Ledley King when he was sent off against Spurs a couple of years ago. There was an England game the following week, and King, Jenas and Defoe all pulled out of the squad through ‘injury’. Could be a co-incidence of course, or it could be a huge cover up. Maybe one day we’ll find out. -Terry was accused by Eto of making racist comments in the Barcelona game last year. -stamping on Torres as he lay on the floor in the CL semi 1st leg at Anfield. -blows snot out of his nose onto Tevez’s neck in the champions league final.

This article completely glosses over the series of racism allegations that stained Terry's career. Seeing as you seem to be judging suitability for the captaincy on character (as well as bizarre non-sequiturs such as whether a player has been burgled or not) then it is a bit of a failing not to bring that up. In addition, Terry has a dreadful record as far as hassling refs is concerned, and he parks his cars in disabled parking bays. Gerrard and Ferdinand are flawed, but Terry, if anything, has more against him

Behave! what has a kid running in front of Gerrard's car or him being burgled got to do with the England captaincy? and please elaborate on what occasions you're talking about when Gerrard has been "there or thereabouts when a few drunken shenanigans have gone on" In terms of good character Gerrard easily has the most unblemished of the three and if you want to champion Terry (or Ferdiand for that matter) you'd be better talking about other traits to prove your case

complete rubbish article, waste my 10 minutes of reading this

Top notch article. I dont see why Liverpool/United fans are comin in here crying becayse the writer thinks Terry is the best captain. He is a real leader. And racism allegations? What the hell are you talking about? Find me a quote from a person/player/manager/tea lady that has accused Terry for being racist. Like a racist would be able to lead a team that has is almost 50 % black

As I left this comment the header at the top of the page said "PERSONAL ABUSE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED". Unless, presumably it is instigated by John Terry towards other professionals and referees. This article is laughable in its bias!!

Hahahahaha. I dont think I have read this many lies in one single post. - Insulted American Tourists after 911 =======BULLSHIT. Find me evidence of this? Please find me evidence that Terry did so. Or wait, is this just another false rumour you cannot prove? "the man who "allegedly" made a racist comment to Ledley King when he was sent off against Spurs a couple of years ago" ======Haha can you prove this? Im guessing Ledley King didnt report Terry because he wanted to be a nice guy? Lol. You are killing me here -Terry was accused by Eto of making racist comments in the Barcelona game last year ======Hahahaha. Why are you making up so many lies? Etoo accused a security staff for racism, NOT Terry. You care to apologize for yet another lie? Pathetic.

As a United fan I have to agree with you. He is a real leader and I would love to have him in my team. Rio is still not up there. Gerrard should not even be mentioned

Terry is one of the best leaders we have in this country. Of course he should be leading the nation.
by Julia XXXXX on July 06, 2008
I love John Terry. And I agree with this article, he is the best leader out of those three.
by Chelsea Blue on July 06, 2008
John Terry racist? Find me proof you lying scouser. Let me guess? You dont have any? What a joke.
by EPYQ80ax Ghers on July 06, 2008
LOL @ these pathetic fans crying over this article. Lets face it Gerrard and Rio are not even close to the leadership qualities that John Terry have. He is a real leader.

John Terry is the best captain in England. We germans love him here, he leads his team like a real captain. There is something german about him that I really like. He plays like a warrior all the time

So if thieves visited Terry's house or a kid jumped right in front of his car, then he is not the best captain? Such unfortunate incidents have no relations with leadership. As for Terry, some of you mentioned that whatever Terry is alleged to have done, whether proven or not, it does not matter. The damage to his reputation is already done. Given that you dismissed Gerrard based on illogical reasons, I could have blamed England's exit from Euro2008 on Terry being captain, and it still would make more sense than your statements.

Forget the rubbish about burglaries and rascism..try and base your article on football ability and leadership ability. JT best captain of the 3 for geeing up the troops, leading by example...Steve Gerrard..as captain can try to do too much..would prefer him in an england shirt doing his stuff and not worrying about captains duties..Rio F..can switch off and loose concentation...again prefer him to do his football stuff and leave the captaincy to someone else....therefore best choice JT...nothign against the other 2 .. i just believe JT is the best England captain of the 3....

wondered why it took u 10 mins to read this article until i realised by your name that english may not be your second or even 3rd language but i'm sure the exercise helps even tho i agree with u that the article indeed leaves a lot to be desired. disappointing. u'd think there ll be more intelligent thinking going into the creation and writing of these articles.

I dont know why but Liverpool fans seem to have such a chip on their shoulder. Any, and i mean any crumb of criticism thrown their way and everyone is the enemy. Perhaps if you didn,t read so much, or even didn,t attemt to find a criticism out of something that isn,t actually there you would progress. Terry is the best natural leader you have yet inner bickering is what spoils England and their futile attempts at gaining success and credibility on the football field.

I am a Chelsea fan, but after seeing Stevie G performed so many miracles,I must take this courage to support the man that could get England out of trouble if needed. Just imagine 3 nil down. then Stevie G flick a header passed the keeper and therefore starts a miraculous comeback for England.
by nickynicknick on July 08, 2008
Of the three options its got to be Gerrard. The other two have no respect from anyone else and they fail to motivate the team on the pitch. Terrys head goes down with the first goal against (all too common for England) and Rio looks around for someone else to blame. Even Stevie G cant get the same attitude going when he takes off the 'pool kit. The truth is we are still looking for a good leader. Perhaps we were too quick to write Becks off after all.

"Early in his career, Terry was involved in an incident at a West London nightclub with Chelsea team mate Jody Morris and Wimbledon's Des Byrne. He was not charged with assault and affray, and later cleared.[10] During the affair, he was given a temporary ban from the England national side by the FA.[11] Previously, along with Chelsea team-mates Frank Lampard, Jody Morris, Eidur Gudjohnsen and former team-mate Frank Sinclair, in September 2001 Terry was fined two weeks wages by Chelsea after drunkenly harassing grieving American tourists in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks."
