Opening night at the US Open was worth me rushing home from work. I live on the West Coast so, the night matches start at 4pm and I don’t get off work until 5pm. Therefore, I left work early, popped on the TV, and I can truly say, I’m proud to be an African American woman.
The tribute given to the women on Opening Night was magnificent. The one thing that stands out in my mind was the line of prestigious women standing and wishing Venus Williams well before her match. When Venus was asked how she felt about it, she said she wished she had more time to talk to the ladies. I must say it was overwhelming. I loved seeing Venus and Serena Williams mother Ocean Price, who’s usually very laid back and calm dancing as Aretha Franklin sang R E S P E C T. That was a classic. I love the US Open, what it stands for and its willingness to embrace all cultures. It’s so fitting that it is held in Flushing Meadows, New York, and a state where diversity really is the HEART of the game. 'It’s so fitting that it is held in Flushing Meadows, New York, and a state where diversity really is the HEART of the game' The tribute to Althea Gibson was so heart felt. It was so humbling. I can’t imagine tennis without Zina Garrison, Venus and Serena Williams, James Blake, Donald Young, Scoville Jenkins, Shanay Perry, Chanda Rubin, Jamea Jackson and even Gael Monfils, but had it not been for Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe, I don’t know what state of matter the USTA would be in. Be that as it may, Serena and Venus held court on Night One.Venus came out in her new designer label EleVen. She looked elegant in her one piece green dress with a white polo collar, dropped waist and pleated skirt and shoes to match. But in the first set she slipped and I got a little nervous hoping the new designer shoes were not the problem. Venus played like the queen she is. She was sharp, focused and seemed to be feeling great. After the match Venus was dancing and full of energy. If all goes according to MY plan she will be this year's champion.
Now let’s get to Serena. I must admit, I was worried about her. In her pre-game interview she didn’t seem excited. She didn’t seem focused. She was almost subdued and that frightened me. However, she looked great in her black tennis dress with pink trimming. She was classy and very elegant. I just will never understand the huge earrings. I would think they would be a distraction. However, It wasn’t the earrings that seemed to be a distraction, but rather a bow on Serena’s dress, which she ripped off during the match.
Once on court, I never really doubted that Serena would loose the match but, I was concerned about her lack of movement. She wasn’t as sharp as Venus and nor did she have that “Serena game face” on. Serena didn’t have an easy victory, and it wasn’t an ugly victory. In the end she won, and I guess that is all that matters. I hope in her next match she picks up some energy because the matches are only going to get tougher. She will need to up her energy level, and move her feet. Otherwise she will find herself out very quickly.
After the match when she was asked about having not played any matches since Wimbledon she seemed as though it was no big deal and feels she’s played enough tennis to do what it takes to win. And she did prove that at this year’s Australian Open. But, when all is said and done, it was Ladies Night and the U.S. Open, African American Ladies Night and Serena and Venus held court. And oh, what a court it was! How proud I am to say, “I’m an African America Woman."

Headline: "Alexandra Smith and Josie Carpenter fly the flag (what flag is that?) for anglo-saxon women." A great opening tribute night at Flushing Meadows to the white players who have made the game what it is today. etc. etc. you make me sick.
"How proud I am to say, “I’m an anglo-saxon Woman." Yep, we can't get away with that, but you can. "Can the Williams sisters hold off the Russian and Serbian women?" What you mean is, your code is, "can these black women hold off whitey slav women." You haven't learnt a thing have you?

I think the wrong question was asked, at the end. But it is really hard to write an article about African Americans, without people spoting comments that could be seen a racism. A great article bt Torria. I to think that Vewnus will win and Serena was a bit off game on Monday. Their my favourite players and the article shouldn't be seen in a racist way. Good work Torria.

The article was very uplifting! Both for Freeman and white...if you are not African American be proud that America was well represented. Shame on you to find fault in that...I guess we're not too far from olympic games 1936? Home Sweet Home but what a "Home" it is?!
Unidas, you're right, we aren't too far from 1936 when the entire premise of this article is racial. One rule for blacks, one for whites. I hope Sharapova wins to make Slavs and other white people proud. I hope that international tennis recognizes the contribution that white players have made to tennis. Is that acceptable? How about, "I hope Hanchukova can hold off the Williams sisters?" Is that because I like the gal, or because, scratch the surface, it's about race? How about, will they do the human race proud? Will they improve Tennis and make it more approachable for all people whatever their background and circumstances?

Let me start by saying what ever I write, I stand behind. However, the questions at the end of the article, "Can the Williams sisters hold off the Russian and Serbian women?" This is NOT MY QUESTION. THIS QUESTION CAME FROM THE SPORTINGO STAFF!!! I would never ask such a question, because I know that Serena and Venus on any day can beat whom ever they play, Black, White, Asian, Russian, Serbian, etc. If you found this article to be racist, then I suggest you look inside SELF. You have a problem, not me. Yes, I'm proud to be an African American, I'm ever prouder of being a WOMAN. You have every right to say you're proud of being Anglo-Saxon. Be that as it may....SAY IT LOUD, I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD!!!!!

Torria, i fully understand the question problem. The editors do this often to my articles, breaking the strong link to the article. It is an annoying problem and should be reconised. Great article.

I think it is a shame you can't lift someone up without someone else feeling put down and getting their feelings all pushed out of shape. Venus and Serena are black women representing America. We should all be proud of that. It's not always about you. Let the light shine on someone else. It will soon come back to you.

There are many people in this place who would like you to think that racism is over so that they could call you stupid. I really don't see anything wrong with the question since we know that Venus and Serena have both wiped the courts with Sharapova and more, as a matter of fact I like to think that they vaccumed the courts with her, since the vaccume cleaner has many parts that could reach all the corners and crevices just like the Williams sisters' style of play. This is not even a question to be asked because Sharapova is Russia's top femal tennis player and I don't need to repeat what I just said. The serbian women are playing very well and I really do love them but the times that Venus lost the matches she played Jankovic, that is just what they were, Venus losing and not Jonkovic winning. Many times Venus loses to Venus and not to the opponent on the other side of the net. The tribute to Althea was long overdue to put it mildly and whoever wants to lift up the anglo-saxon women could go ahead and
