Although Justine Henin has broken down Serena Williams on many occasions, the American is arguably the best in the game. With many devoted fans comes much jealously and ignorance. Problems with injuries have compromised long-term consistency but with her dazzling comebacks, what makes Serena so special?Let’s take a look at her playing style. She generates power continuously which elevates the speed of the ball. Her movement, which comes from those sturdy legs, sets her up for stunning shots. The backhand is by far the better side - Serena will always keep a sharp eye out for short balls. This enables her to hammer down with immense power.
Serena’s forehand also brushes up well, it’s more than power and she will use it to exploit angles. The serve is one of the biggest in the game, it fizzes off the court. And just like the serve, the return is equally fierce. At times she will edge closer to the service line, and fire. She is also a devoted runner on court, as she will do just about anything to stay in the point.
A new observation this year is the Serena slice. Mostly favoured on the forehand side, a lot of people were shocked at this new development. Especially after the sluggish slices she put in in her Roland Garros quarter-final. While it may not be the best slice around, it’s capable of doing a bit of damage. Serena is also an impressive net player, her numerous Grand Slam doubles titles are proof of this. Serena is still a difficult opponent to beat. Take Justine Henin - we can still see tactics that the Belgian uses to hurt her. Justine was extremely aggressive against Serena recently, but she still maintained her stunning variety. Henin would input the odd drop-shot or slice. This was effective because it dramatically changed the pace of the ball, increased the tricky spins, dragged Serena to the net and was at times unpredictable.
Although Serena’s determination did keep her in the points, Henin’s astonishing range of variety gave her the ability to mix up the points consistently, which couldn’t give Serena easy shots and made it extremely difficult. But there are no real solid tactics that will break through Serena’s defence, she is too composed and devoted.
In her fourth-round Wimbledon match, she screamed for mercy as was reduced to tears when cramping up badly on court. Even with the after-shocks, she won her final set against Daniela Hantuchova. Serena was warned that if she continued (which she did), she could make it worse. Yet she carried on - some say it was a brave move while others say it was a stupid decision. Serena will most likely be hindered with injuries throughout 2008, but she will always remain a huge threat. We could see yet one or more Grand Slam(s) to her name. She will have a fight on her hands, as sister Venus, Henin, Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport and a few others will pitch strongly against her. But there is still a lot more gold left in Serena’s career. I honestly believe that Serena Williams was possibly one of the best players in the World. And when I say was, I mean that now Justine has surpassed her. Justine really recreated her game, in order to be able to beat the Williams, which she did successfully. Although not taking away from Serena's remarkable Aussie Open last year, much of me thinks, that would she have been so successful if Justine was there??

What is this arguments, "Justine is the best now and better than serena". Sometimes i doubt some of you know what a racket is, cos if you do, you wount be talking these rubish. Serena was out of tennis for some years, she came back in Austrelia, struggled but still wone. Because of sickness she was out again. Came back in MIAMI and bet Justin in the final. Meanwhile, she never dropped a set until the final. In Rolsan garros she was missing all her shots due to lack of matches which causes low consistency. Before The US open, she was out for a couple of months. Went in US open and lost in the Quarters against Justin. What i'm trying to say is, lets stop comparing a 60% or 70% fitness and consistency(Serena) with a 100% fitness and consistency(Justin). Justin has been been playing tournaments after tournaments even before serena's comeback. So, she should be better. Lets dont forget what happened to Justin in Wembledon 2005 when she lost in first round. In an interview She said she hadnt had much

I was very please to see that there are other elite observers who know that Serena Williams is the best Tennis player out there. Greatness never dies and it is clear that as soon as Serena gets her confidence back----and she will, her determination will see to it, she's very likely---especially since she has so many doubters---to run another Serena slam. Justine Henin had a good year(her success still seems too good to be true), but Miss Williams is the only one with a career slam and the most grand slams in recent history. Everyone knows---though many are reluctant to admit it, that she is "The Greatest." When she's in good health and has match practice, she is unbeatable, and I applaud the writer of this for bring us back to the truth.

enough already with this 'if she is healthy / if she gets her confidence back" wisheful thinking. the girl's best moments are obviously behind her. Dupal Serena plays at the Aussie after months of inactivity and she wins it. At Roland Garros she was missing her shots because of lack of match play? Quit contradicting yourself. Quit putting it all down to fitness. If she's unfit it's her fault. She should lay off the buffet table. And by the way, Justine's 100% fitness and consistency is all credit to her. Serena is not the greatest, i repeat, not the greatest. She's the greatest whiner/loser/has-been, that's what she's greatest at.

I don't think Serena is known to be a whiner. I think that would be Martina Hingis. Also, I don't think Serena Williams is a loser...that would be Sharapova. Get your facts straight. And regardless of whatever happens with her tennis, Serena is and always will be known as a great champion. She is the only woman's player on tour to have won on all surfaces...and the only to have all Grand Slams in a calendar year. And for the record, Serena won the Australian open in 2007 then followed that with a win in Miami...beating Justine on the way to that title. So get the facts straight. You don't have to give Serena any credit...the facts are there.

She is not the only woman on tour to have won on all surfaces, justine has won on clay, hardcourt, carpet and on grass at eastbourne for 2 consecutive years already. so has mauresmo. No she did not win all 4 grand slams in a calendar year, nor was she the first: Martina Navratilova did that in 83-84. Todate, only 2 women have swept the slams in one calendar year: Maureen Connoly did it in 1953 and Steffi Graf did it in 1988. You forgot to say that she followed up her Miami win over henin with 3 consecutive losses to henin on 3 different surfaces on the largest tournament stages. If attributing losses to not being at maximum fitness and opponents hitting lucky shots is not whining, dude give me some of that pot that youre smoking because i want to be transported to that dreamland of yours
james you seem to have way too much time for posting. dont you have a frog to dissect in biology and a chemical equation to balance. your juvenile disposition towards accepting reality and moving forward belies your tough talk. go grow some more chest hairs and come back when you've earned enough from years of gainful employment before you loiter in places where intelligent adults hang out. dupal, go build a shrine.
