While fans swooned and photographers frantically debated which tennis beauty to point their lens at, Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic put forth an impressive display of skill, determination, sportsmanship and eloquence in the 2008 Australian Open women’s final.
For all the hype that surrounded the obvious aesthetic appeal and marketability of the encounter, these two remarkable competitors quickly reminded us that it was, above all, a tennis match, and a good one at that.
Sharapova was the clear favourite heading in after she breezed through a very difficult draw that included such obstacles as Justine Henin, Lindsay Davenport and third-ranked Jelena Jankovic – tests that the Russian passed with incredible ease.
Following an inspired victory over Venus Williams, Ivanovic found herself in the jaws of defeat against Daniela Hantuchova in the semi-final, but mounted an improbable comeback to earn a berth in her second Slam final.
The delightful Serb gave her many fans around the world reason to be proud as she went toe to toe with Sharapova who is arguably the most intimidating player on the tour when at her best. And Ivanovic had her chances to derail the mighty Maria, but just couldn’t convert them.
In the end, it was Sharapova who proved to her critics that she could handle the pressure of being the favourite to win a major and showed the heart of a champion en route to her third Grand Slam crown.
The blonde bombshell played great tennis during the fortnight, a testament to her strict off-season training regime that enabled her to improve fitness and footwork and rediscover her serve.
What a difference a year makes – after being utterly dismantled by Serena Williams in last year’s final and struggling with various setbacks throughout her 2007 campaign, Sharapova was all but left for a has been. Now, she finds herself one win away from completing the coveted Grand Slam, a feat that so few have accomplished.
Sharapova claims she has yet to reach her peak, a telling statement from a young woman who seems to have new lease on her tennis life.
“No matter how many tough times or bad days I'm going to have, as long as I wake up in the morning and can't wait to get that tennis racquet out of my bag, I'll always be looking forward to improving,” Sharapova reflected after the match.
Ivanovic is the most likely candidate to rival Sharapova in years to come.
Each player has her own endearing qualities that will make her a formidable global leader and ambassador for tennis. What was most enjoyable about the season’s first Slam final were the gracious acceptance speeches delivered by both players during the trophy presentation. With these two standout personalities ready to take over the reins, women’s tennis certainly seems to be in good hands.
“[Maria] is a great competitor,'' Ivanovic observed. ''I'm sure she will do well in the future as well. I really feel I'm also improving my game and I'm learning how to be a top player. So I'm sure we'll have plenty of opportunities to play against each other in the final of a Grand Slam.''

Ivanovic, in my opinion would be a brilliant champion. Nice to see the Nadal and Federer monopoly being broken at Aussie open - hope we see it at other tournaments.

Damn! I can already imagine ads on TV with Maria and Ana together in lingerie! 'Miss Nike and Miss Adidas: Make love, not war' This is gonna be a good rivalry. And hopefully Ana doesn't get any chubbier. She's already chubby enough. Chubby, but cute. (err... beautiful) Blonde vs brunette? What do choose? I'll take both. Tis' both hot anyway.

What a laugh, to suggest a new guard has emerged in the game, when the 'veterans' actually thoroughly dominated last year, and this is just one tournament you cite, where Henin and the Williams were nowhere near their best. Ivanovic and Sharapova will be hard-pressed to come up with simialr runs the rest of the year. And the final a good match???? You must be delusional. It was one-note and chock-full of errors. If you think the power game equates to a 'bright' future for tennis, you have my sympathies. By all accounts, you'd rather have Roddick atop the rankings over Federer!

Kumar, I like your comments. Maria won Aussie fair and square but we all know that Justine, Serena and Venus are not going to continue playing that badly as they did at the AO. They will return as I am sure Maria is aware. I will not even mention Ivanovic. She plays decent tennis but if she is going to play like she has in the past in each of her finals, she does not deserve to get there. How can you get to the finals and play so poorly? She should have played with an adrenaline rush after beating Venus and Hantuchova. Even then, I think Sharapova was determined to win, particularly when she beat Justine and discovered that she did not have to face Venus and her nightmare, Serena. No matter how poorly Serena plays, she will never allow Maria to beat her again.

I know it's all in the eye of the beholder. In my eyes Elena Dementieva is far more beautiful. http://gallery.panorama.it/albums/upload/fo to/vip_18_19/normal_vip19_01_tennis2.jpg

I don't think people are giving Sharapova enough credit. I think she played great tennis to beat Henin in the quarters and deserved to win the tournament more than any other player. Justine didn't play badly in their quarterfinal like some people are implying. Sharapova just didn't let her play her best by using some awesome shot making and quick movement. As for Ivanovic, I am a fan of her gracefulness and power, but she's too inconsistent. When she's on, she is ON, but that doesn't happen often enough. I was very dissapointed in the final. There were so many short points ending in unforced errors, especially from Ivanovic, who seemed to mishit ball after ball. Though I am not the biggest fan of Sharapova, I still think she's a great player and can see her having an awesome 2008 season if she stays healthy. As for Ivanovic, I hope she becomes more consistent so I can see better rallies instead of quick points all of the time. And I agree with 'Pov': though Ivanovic is beautiful, I believe Dementieva is prettier, and a better tennis player as well:equally as powerful but more consistent and more athletic. I hope the rankings show that soon, as Dementieva is one of my favorite players.
