Cricket is among the top three most popular sports in Australia, England, South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Mauritius. The ICC, its ruling body, has 10 Test playing nations and 104 member countries. The game also cherishes the ‘most popular’ tag in 20 countries. Hey Amrit, this top ten list is fantastic. It is no surprise htat Footbal is the most popular sport in the world, but basketball is making great strides in becoming the most popular sport. I still don't think that it will ever pass football though. You can post this to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/ and link back to your site. We are trying to create a directory for top ten lists where people can find your site. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

It is possible that basketball will pass soccer, so not impossible
by FIFA on May 24, 2009
Basketball can only dream of having the same amount of popularity of football. It's naive to think that 'bball' can thrill as many people as football. Football will be the number one sport in the world for a very long time to come.

your information on ice hockey is very poor!....first, ice hockey is played in an arena..not a stadium. the average arena holds 21000 people, a far cry from 40 000. second, what does articial turf have to do with ice??...great hockey is defiantely not one of great britains top four sports...Canada is the best damn hockey country in the world regardless of iihf championships...and it is also the best game EVER

Hey guys! Did you hear about website that gives you some prizes for free? You just collect points and then can get very valuable prizes. For example iPod Shuffle costs 150 PTZ, PSP 200 PTZ. You can get 2 PTZ by logging in every day and 2 PTZ by answering the daily question. For each invited friend you get also 2 PTZ. When you have invited 20 friends you become Z-lister (kind of VIP) and then every PTZ that you collect goes double. That is really cool! In a few weeks i have more than 200 PTz and i am waiting to get my brand new PSP. If you are interested in write an email for my: medusas@klaipedoje.lt I will send you invites. Good luck! And there is one little proof: youtube.com/watch?v=gfMm_9MmGNU !

My god there are some outrageous comments here!! Typical Americans think that they are the only ones that count! How could Baseball possibly even nearly be on this list Johannes! Also hilarious that Table Tennis (played by the largest nation in the world and lpenty more in that region) ain't on the list, or tennis (a truly worldwide sport) for that matter. Soccer is certainly up there in popularity, and Cricket can't be too far behind thanks in a big way to India's 1 billion+ population. Also do not underestimate the popularity of Golf. It beats the lard out of Ice Hockey, Rugby League and American football thats for sure. There are plenty of lists out there with massively varying results all claiming legitimacy. Ali Rivol please don't quote Wikipedia or anything like it as the source of the "official list". Your tempting me to go in myself (as we know we all can) and change it to Hurling (easily the most skilful sport and in my opinion the most enjoyable to watch and play). Okay, I vented there a little bit! And by the way, Man U do suck balls! esp since the crybaby Ronnie is gone!!

cricket is the most exciting game....considering that there are three formats [test-odi-t20] this makes the game more interesting....different tactics are deployed for different format's of the game ...i'm not criticizing other games but one get's to see the same same format and same tactics being employed ...in cricket u need different skills to adapt to different format's of the game and tht makes it interesting...tht dosent take away from the fact tht soccer is the most popular game in the world...>

ha ha idiot no likes your shite american games, only basketball is worth watchin......
are u sayin every 90 minutes u will never see a goal? have u seen barcelona play recently? there are on average 2.6 goals every game, so what the fuck are u talkin about idiot?
by lolz cats on April 01, 2010
johannes larsen, you are completely wrong. Cricket is indeed #2 in the world, although people as narrow-minded as you would be tough to convince. Volleyball, handball, and bicycling? Completely wrong. Also, Rugby should be higher than basketball and baseball. People like to think Basketball is truly international, but it just seems that way because it is over-televised by U.S. networks during the olympics. It is still chiefly American in its players and for its spectators.
by wut iz up on April 01, 2010
"the list is accurate, basketball is more of an international game than cricket, which is only boosted cos there are billions of indians on the subcontinent, thus making cricket look good. when in fact cricket is un heard of in most places" Cricket is a truly international sport - so much so that they grew out of the Olympics and now host their OWN world cup - similar to soccer and rugby. Basketball is truly a regional sport - it really isn't very popular in European countries at all, where it plays second-fiddle to several other sports. Only in America is it appreciated very much - a fact obscured by the Olympics, because ntelevision networks always over-televise basketball.

i would like to correct you on the origin of football it is not Chinese but solely English yes the Chinese did play a game where you kicked a ball but it is far from football now on to England it has been played in England for an unknown amount of years King Henry VIII comes to mind as he passed a law banning football so we would practice archery but the rules were not written until the 1800s
on April 06, 2010 on April 06, 2010
ha ha keep dreaming gronk. football is un passable
You may be correct in your surmisation that basketball is in fact made to look bigger than it is through television, but cmon, who watches the ipl? indians, indians, indians and couple of aussies and south africans. throw in a couple of english (and i mean a couple, literally) and a kiwi and there u have it. NBA is watched all over the world, and was popularized by michael jordan, a true athlete, which im sorry but cricket have never had and will never have. im a big fan of cricket, but u cant tell me that its a more international game than basketball. whereas cricket is followed intensely by certain countrys (and u can count them on your hands) basketball is universally accepted and known. its superstars are well known throughout the world, and the big clubs in NBA have universal appeal, not to mention legendary status. whereas cricket stars are not known in most places, and club sides in cricket?? its gonna take a heck of a long time for the IPL to even get close to NBAs status on the globe, and the cricket world cup is only viable because of the 200 million viewers on the sub continent. otherwise, i'll reiterate, its un heard of in most places on earth. its a shame but its the truth. great sport, but a bit confusing regarding the rules, and slightly boring if its not 20 20 for most sports followers barring india, pakistan, bangla, sri lanka. (combine pop. 1.5 billion)
cricket will never defeat football! football rules four continents! south america, africa, europe and the middle east/south east asia. this means HUGE numbers. cricket rules the sub continent, with its 1.5 billion people. other than that, cricket is a minor sport elsewhere except south africa, australia (both tiny) and england, where its the second or third sport. are u gonna tell me theIPL or cricket world cup will one day overtake the english premier league or world cup? buddy the european nations cup football by itself is bigger than the cricket world cup and ipl put together. dont be ridicilous bro. and dont talk merde

Identifying the most popular sport is difficult and the answers may vary depending on the criteria. For instance, is popularity defined by revenue, participants (including amateur and leisure participants), fans, etc.? Or some combination of various criteria? One study which considered the number of actual participants in sports found the 10 most popular sports in the world to be the following (note that not all of these sports may be considered "team" sports: 1) Volleyball, 2) Basketball, 3) Table Tennis, 4) Soccer (Association Football), 5) Badminton, 6) Tennis, 7) Baseball, 8) Dragon Boat Racing, 9) Team Handball, 10) Ice Hockey. The remainder of the list included Judo, Rugby, Cycling, Bocce, and Cricket. I just thought I'd share this as an item of interest and not as any endorsement of the study. It should be noted that some of the numbers supplied by some of the international sports organizations coulod be self-servingly inflated. And as I mentioned previously, even if the numbers are accurate, this is just one way and not necessarily the best way to rank popularity.

It's really hard to put together a list of the most popular sport, but this is a decent list. I se a lot of people pushing for cricket, but that sport is pretty much limited to old British colonies. Basketball is a clear #2 behind the obvious soccer (football) as #1. Basketball is VERY popular in Eastern Europe and China, plus decently popular most everywhere else. The NBA itself has players from about 75 different countries.

dude have you forgotten about tennis? it is played in every continent around the world. like last year the wimbledon men's final between Federer and roddick had the second highest number of tv viewers of any sporting event that year? tennis is definetely bigger than basketball because basketball is mainly watched in the US, while tennis is watched in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia

Handball is far bigger than rugby league (which is nowhere near the top 10) and possibly a couple of of the others on the list, they have professional leagues in most of Europe, just it's not really played in the UK. Rugby union should be a little bit lower than that, the TV viewing figures for the world cup are fictitious and the participation figures are low, most of the world barely plays it. Basketball is probably number 2 in participation, but India skews the figures for cricket up a lot so that is close. Baseball is a major sport in the Americas and Far East so that really is up there, anyone that thinks rugby union is bigger than baseball or basketball worldwide is delusional. Also many of the posts on here haven't read the title, this is the most popular TEAM sports, so of course tennis, table tennis etc. aren't on it. Though replace rugby league with handball and you've got the top 10 but just in the wrong order
by John Smith on June 01, 2010
The reason why football is the most popular sport in the world is because the gear is cheap with people only needing a ball and maybe football boots. As an Australian I like cricket because of the way you can swing the ball, bowl bouncers while in batting timing the ball for ball or smashing the ball for six. My opinion on some junior soccer players I see is that they do all these tricks like juggling but when do they use them in a game. Cricket is better for your mind as it is a test of your mental strength depending on whether it is hot(Aus), cold (england) or humid (India)and all the sledging that goes around is certainly testing how strong you are mentally

by r e on June 10, 2010
all sports are good to play and they also keep you healthy and fit. why is everyone fighting. it would be boring if there were only a couple of sports played. sports depend on where you grow up, especially the climate and facilities. i personally find soccer boring to watch as nothing really happens but its alright to play.. i like really like Australian football as it is different and fast and always exciting.
by aodhan browning on June 11, 2010
its accually football(soccer)then rugby at #2 and rugby is also the fastest growing sport right now in america. most say that it is lacrosse but they are wrong all these list are based on opinion not population. sorry to tell you but the list is wrong the only thing right is soccer.
by u k on June 11, 2010
FOOTBALL is far and away the greatest sport in the world, entertainment wise and fan base wise. Cricket is the dullest sport that has ever existed. Who wants to sit in a field for 20 hours waiting for something to happen before it's called off due to light rain. Rugby is also great and is better than shitty american football hands down. SUPER BURNLEY FC UTC

the fact japan has two world cups is misleading for one before last year the states never sent a team and i dont think canada has ever sent a team. and even if both countried did they still aren't sending their profesionals most likely because the americans didnt last time. so no offense japan but dont get excited, your about 3rd best at football ( gridiron) but will never beat canada's and the us's football teams

Can you guys not read, it says 'team' sports. Golf and tennis are individual sports, not team sports.
by Daniel on June 18, 2010
I find this very bias towards american sports....I disagree with american football, baseball, and basketball being so high (american football shouldn't even be on the list). Being one that plays rugby union for a local club here in the USA..I know it's never been the most popular here in the USA but I have seen Tri-nations on television, and I've been able to watch the 6 Nations and Rugby World Cup in person....Rugby Union has to be two or three on the list. And cricket should be brought down the list.

8. Ice Hockey: A winter sport boosted by the advent of artificial turf TURF!? Ice is ice! Ice Hockey enjoys popularity throughout the seasons and is amongst the top four sports in the United States, Russia, Canada, Norway , Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Slovakia. The National Hockey League is the most popular league and captures the lion’s share among all the hockey leagues, pulling in average crowds of 40,000 to the stadiums STADIUMS?? Ice hockey is played on ICE RINKS. Classicists might prefer stadia. in the US and watched by millions on TV across Europe and America. The International Ice Hockey Federation, with 66 members, stages the World Championship where Russia are the defending champions.

CRICKET SUKS>>>>
by toby kalashinakov on June 30, 2010
where i come from soccer rules the roost - basketball is played only by girls - you must be nuts to call it more popular than rugby etc. rugby is a really manly sport. Most American sports are really girlish - all padded up with helmets and all. American footballers are all covered up unlike rugby - baseball involves catching with gloves on. Cricket players catch a heavier ball with their bare hands. And frankly only the ultra feminine americans and the poor weakly built japs and chines play baseball etc. Hurrah for the real sports to originate from uk.
forgot to add that even ice hockey is poorer than the actual field hockey. most of USA's popular sports are cheap variations of other sports, hence not popular outside the US and their cronies. Also some joker listed handball as a highly popular sport .Nuts.....

rugby league may not be the most popular but is definately the most entertaining... end to east hard running and not just kick and clap union, football is slow boring and is getting worse with dicricket is a good sport to watch but can get boring, when rugby finally expands internationally everyone will love it and nfl is also very good
by Craig Stevenson on July 05, 2010

No way basketball has a chance against sports like Football. There's just no way. You talk about its popularity in countries like Spain, Germany and others but even though, its popularity is ridiculous compared to football (soccer).
by Bob Simpson on July 10, 2010
Judging merely on attendance records for sporting leagues, the AFL is the most attended sport by a mile in the world, with 1,711 people per million attending each game. The next best is 856 with the Canadian Football League. Not a bad effort, considering that two of the bigger states in Australia (Queensland and New South Wales) utterly despise the sport and stick to Rugby League. Also, Tasmania and the Northern Territory dont even have a team, while all other states (excluding Victoria) have only 2. Statistics don't lie. IMHO Association Football is only so popular due to the way colonisation has panned out and due to how easy it is for anyone to start a game of it, even people in the slums of 3rd world countries.
by Pippy Reed on July 11, 2010
I read not so long ago Soccer the popular sport going by TV ratings. Second is Rugby. Well look at it this way. There is Fifa and there is Rugby World Cup. I can't stand Soccer. Rugby players, have you seen how strong and big they are? When it comes to sports the bigger and stronger the better, right :) A good rugby team is All Blacks.

Sorry to tell you that I have to question the veracity of everything in this article considering how WILDLY incorrect the average attendance for NHL hockey is in this article. First of all, they play in arenas, not stadiums (although the Chicago arena used to be named Stadium). Secondly, most NHL arenas seat no more than 20,000 tops, many seat several thousand less than this. How then could average attendance be 40,000?

Oh and in terms of World cup attendance... Yes WORLD CUPS. Football(soccer) 2010 - 49'000/match attd Rugby (union) 2007 - 47'000/Match attd Rugby is only Second to Football. Oh and you mentioned the 6 nations tournament. It involves 6 countries with 15 matches in total. The match avg attd for this years 2010 match attd was over 70'000/match!!!! Look it up!
