It's time they let Tiger swing his woods at the Olympics
The American superstar has achieved nearly everything in his own sport - but will he ever be able to win the ultimate gold medal? Chris Goldsmith believes that as well as golf, the Games should include rugby and squash.

Just about every sport regularly has its own World Championships but what everyone really wants to win is an Olympic medal. The Games only take place every four years so gold, silver and bronze gongs are hard to come by for most athletes - but for some, like Tiger Woods, it isn't even a possibility since his sport does not have Olympic recognition.
It's a damn shame. How can such a superb sportsman not be able to win a gold medal?
Golf is a brilliant sport. It's played by many men and more and more ladies and is becoming one of the most popular pastimes on the planet. It is seen as a stress-relieving sport by many businessmen who just can't wait to get out of the office and head to the golf course to play a quick 18 holes.
I think golf is fantastic to play and also great armchair viewing. Just look at how tense the final round of a US Masters can be or how the weather can influence many a televised tournament. How more dramatic can it get than the final day's play at the Ryder Cup, where birdies galore can swing every match one way then the other?

Got alot of respect for your articles buddy, but I think you've pitched into the bunker on this one. Golf should never be an Olmypic sport. The Olympic games are about athletisism, a trait which is a way down the list of essencial skills for a golfer. There are a bunch more plausable arguments against it, but that seems to me to be the most logical.

Hi Jon, Shooting is an olympic sport, I'm not sure you need to be more of an athlete there when compared to Golf. I agree with you in general, Golf isn't an athletic sport, it's more about skill (Why not make chess an olympic sport as well, people compete in that too!). Just take into account that the gate was opened to non strictly athletic sports at the olympics with shooting, in my opinion.

This article kind of misses then point about what a top sporting event is all about. Watching the World igure Skating Championships this week, it is clear that their sport works on a 4 year cycle and that the Olympics is the pinnacle of that cycle. Golf would have probably 50 players and a max of 3 per country - imagine the quality of a tournament with just 3 Americans - it would be a bauble next to a Major. Also note: Andy Roddickis passing on the OG as well, so it clearly isn't the ultimate for tennis players either. Rugby, just a stepping stone to the World Cup or a second division event like 7s - bad idea. Squash - 100% YES.
