The United States national team finally won gold at a competition on its home soil. It has been a while since we could write about something like this. Kobe Bryant and Co. made their point on Sunday afternoon - anyone wanting gold in Beijing will have to beat a superb Team USA.

The last time the US won a competition in such convincing fashion, Michael Jordan was on the team. Not everything has changed since then, though, as coach Mike Krzyzewski was there in Barcelona as well.

The US continued its hot shooting from three-point range by hitting 20 of their 41 three-point attempts. Leading the way was LeBron James, who hit eight threes and finished with a game high 31.

Argentina was down and out almost from the tip-off. They never managed to slow the tempo and make it an inside battle. It really is too bad, as Luis Scola once again showed off all of his skills in scoring 23 points. The US’s trio of big men were unable to hold the Argentine captain, who came away with the competition's MVP title.

The US handled Scola with many different defenses. They tried to clog the middle with a zone, and for the first time in this competition the zone was actually working well for the Americans. It forced Argentina to use the wings instead of the inside, and it took away clear passing zones to the post.

The US also sent Carmelo Anthony in to guard Scola, and while he may give up some size to the Argentinian, Anthony’s quickness allowed him to stop Scola from cutting to the hole on more than one occasion. Of course they could not stop Scola, they merely managed to slow him, which probably was the plan from the get-go.

On the other end of the court, the US could do no wrong. Bryant was dishing out some incredible assists, LeBron and Melo were hitting shots from everywhere, and Dwight Howard was dunking it on every occasion.
In the end it became am 118-81 win for the USA, and they have clearly sent a message to all teams going to the Olympics. Argentina, on the other hand, was not too down on the result. They figure to be much improved next year, when players like Manu Ginobili and Andres Nocioni will likely be on the team.
