The thought is interesting, is Stern worried about up and coming leagues? I don't think he is worried, its just he wants to dominate the world. lol The examples you sited seem to me were more homesickness after a failed NBA effort. I would love to see a competing league and so would the players. A one world league would also mean a one world momopoly, fixing not only salaries, but other important CBA matters like arbritation, trade rules etc.... The more worldwide publicity for the NBA even if it promotes other leagues will always be good for the NBA. Its just sound marketing. Which is what the NBA is all about. FIBA presents an opportunity for national teams to display how they have grown on the world scene. Dissapointing to many Americans was the lack of TV from the FIBA qualifiers. The NBA wanted to show the games on its own channnel, but FIBA demanded too much money. ($125,000) Way to high when the NBA was using them for more of an info service and not for profit. FIBA's greed was our loss.

It is a possibility in the future but for now the players who left were benchers and star players in only their minds. By the way, Pana got spanked by the top teams in the NBA. Beating the Grizzlies and Raptors by 1 , in the preseason only confirms the fact that the top teams in the Euroleague would only be middle to low teams in the NBA. Let's hope there are more international players in the NBA. They add to this great game but we are a few years away. The top players will always go to the NBA.

... that in the article I am speaking of the future, while using current trends to forecast that future. Despite the success of international teams in international tournaments against the USA, I don't believe that European clubs can consistently top NBA teams, but with that said, the idea that other national teams beating the USA consistently, has been out of the question from 1992-2000. I am more asserting that times have changed and will continue to change. NBA talent is so great that progress in talent and skill slows at a certain point while on the other hand, the rest of the world had a huge learning curve and much room for improvement, so their progress is much more noticeable. Do I think it will happen next season? No. Is exodus a strong word? Yes (Sportingo changed my original title). I just believe that eventually we'll be looking at two competing major leagues and that this past offseason was a glimpe of things to come. Stuart

Stuart, You mean an Editor shamelessly changed your title to get more views to an article? Bad Editors! Bad Editors! lol -just teasing with you Stuart

Stuart, thanks for clarifying your views. I know the headings are not your choice because my article's heading was determined by the editors. Sometimes those headings are good and sometimes they are not indicative of the author's true thoughts. Keep writing, we love vibrant discussions and topics.

The problem is that rules are different, i am certain that NBA teams playing in Europe would just be as bad as European teams playing in the NBA. Also the players that leave the US for the Euroleague have sometimes as much trouble adapting to the style played in Europe as the Europeans have in the NBA. Take a look at Tony Delk, 50 points in an NBA game used by the panathinaikos team as a 3rd substitute played a total of 4 minutes in the semifinal and final4 or other players in the past such as Dominique Willkins NBA superstar played for Panathinaikos also in the 1996 season and only played (i mean well)in the Final4, personally i think the euroleague is much more interesting than the NBA, and in the future will have even more talent due to the fast rise of the teams budget. Panathinaikos and Olympiakos (teams from Greece, not the richest country in Europe!) for example had a combined budget of 10 Million Euros 5 years ago an now they have a budget of approximately 50 (72.5 million US dollars) so my guess is

Hey all, thanks for the responses.

I am not really bothered by the title change as I understand a title with a little more oomph brings in readers, and admittedly, the original subject line was a bit bland :)

Stuart
It is a possibility in the future but for now the players who left were benchers and star players in only their minds. By the way, Pana got spanked by the top teams in the NBA.
Yes thats true, what would be happen if Pana played more than 2 games with NBA rules? Don´t forgett that NBA have other rules than europe ;) Some others said that they had to learn the rules and try to play like an NBA team, sorry guys but for only 2 games no coach would change the whole system of a team, especially when he has to play some days later official league and euroleague games. I think that european "basketball" has the better quality and NBA has better show. sorry for my bad english

The best basketball players play in the NBA or want to play in the NBA period. Yes, it is boring until the playoffs begin but there is no way Pana is beating the top teams, yet. Someday, but for now they are middle to low end in the NBA.
