The most recent NBA clash between the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat wasn't a very good game and served only to highlight the defects of both teams.

The Bulls have a bunch of good, young players. But as everybody has been quick to point out, their big problem is balance between the different lines. We could describe the roster as a collection of small and big forwards. Only Ben Wallace and Kirk Heinrich escape this definition and this is the main reason they are kept in the team.

However, in order to be a competitive team capable of going far in the play-offs, the roster needs a thorough overhaul, something the management have been reluctant to do. It is necessary to free some space in the forward line and bring in at least one big center, a good point guard, and a couple of players able to shoot the ball from the three-point arc.

Over the past year, the gossips have been reflecting on the possible transfer of Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies to a different team. The Bulls have been mentioned. It has even been suggested that Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro could go to Chicago for Joakim Noah and Andres Nocioni. The bad news is that the Bulls would lose a young player in Noah, but would get another big guy (with a lower salary than in Memphis) and a good long range shooter in exchange. For me, that would make good business.

Also over the past year, Jason Kidd has indicated that he wants to leave the Nets in the middle of the season due to personal problems. Kidd still has at least a couple of good seasons in him and Chicago would be a good destination. Heinrich would be a very good second guard and could learn plenty from one of the best NBA guards around.

This transfer would be tricky as the Bulls would have to free up some salary space, especially is Gasol were to be taken on board. The Bulls might have to do a spot of offloading, Lou Deng (I would keep him), Ben Gordon (my favorite to leave the team) or Joe Smith. If all this failed, there are other players to check like Chris Paul or Refer Alston. Indeed José Calderon will be free agent this summer and he could be a good alternative option.

Depending on what they can pick on the 2008 Draft, and the free agent markets, the Bulls could get under way to a brighter future, but the pieces need to be moved right now.
