It seems the skeptics may be right after all!
The top Test team of 2008, Graeme Smith's Proteas, may NOT dethrone Ricky Pontings Saggy Greens this year as I predicted - because India will beat us to it.
Just like Robert Scott's late arrival at the South Pole, a bitter pill indeed. Who really wants to be SECOND to beat the Aussies in 2008? Talk about flogging a dead donkey!
You could say that if I'm prepared to put my house on South Africa whipping the Aussies this year, I'll bet the farm on the Indians slaughtering the Australians in India.
South Africa, nonetheless, will complete their dream season as the undisputed top TEST cricket side in 2008 partly because of their performances in India early this year.
The Proteas triumphed in India (although it was ''sculptured'' into a rather dodgy draw with a decidedly designer Kanpur wicket) and I cannot see Ricky Ponting matching Graeme Smith's sub-continental heroics.
The Saggy Greens are going down and, to me, it's just a pity it's not Graeme Smith doing the burying. The Proteas have played ALL the cricket in 2008, with Test tours through Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, England AND home fixtures against the West Indies and New Zealand. They rightly deserve to be the matadors delivering the coup de grace to the wounded ring-rusty Aussies.
But alas alak, this isn't a fair world and Indian coach Gary Kirsten's going to be the only South African able to smugly brag he truly downed and dethroned the once-mighty Aussies.
Graeme Smith will only get to ''lick his pan'' with a lesser trophy of flogging the crestfallen Ricky Ponting later this year. Although victory Down Under will leave him with his feet up smoking a fat cigar in consolation that South Africa will have that ICC Test No.1 slot, they'll have completed their dream season and will have finally beaten the Aussies in their own backyard!

Fact-whenever Australia suffer a disappointment they always bounce back wit ha vengeance. When they lost to India in 2000-01 after playing some fine cricket, they came back all guns blazing against all teams thereafter, including England and your beloved South Africa! And India's 'victory' over the Aussies is not guaranteed by any means, because while the Baggy Greens' bowling attack may be inexperienced on the whole they still look capable of doing well, although the spinners might be targeted. And their batting line-up is perfectly capable of turning it on when needed! As for India, their batting line-up isn't really firing on all cylinders and much will rest on the bowling. And as for the South Africans, their bowling attack is decent but quite inconsistent, and with the likes of Kallis and Boucher in poor form with the bat, you've got it all to do! My question to you, Smith, would be: if and when you suffer a predicted home-and-away pounding from Ricky Ponting's side, will you blame the administrators again like you usually do? :)

I believe the saffers should wear a grey uniform this year seeing as they cant choose between black and white players even though its 2008. Greg you simple boy south africa only have 1 player ever to have performed against aussie and thats kallis and even hes struggling the rest of your players a nothing special every time i see smith face up to lee hes looks out of his depth and to mention your bowlers they better get use to fetching leather. Why do you mob let this toss that is greg smith write this dribble?

Greg, Smith won't have a chance when he confronts the full might of the baggy green. All your faith will be misplaced. And he's contracted a sore elbow, all because he hasn't got a girlfriend. We know what causes it. SA will be humbled mightily by the Aussies.
