It seems the skeptics may be right after all!

The top Test team of 2008, Graeme Smith's Proteas, may NOT dethrone Ricky Pontings Saggy Greens this year as I predicted - because India will beat us to it.

Just like Robert Scott's late arrival at the South Pole, a bitter pill indeed. Who really wants to be SECOND to beat the Aussies in 2008? Talk about flogging a dead donkey!

You could say that if I'm prepared to put my house on South Africa whipping the Aussies this year, I'll bet the farm on the Indians slaughtering the Australians in India.

South Africa, nonetheless, will complete their dream season as the undisputed top TEST cricket side in 2008 partly because of their performances in India early this year.

The Proteas triumphed in India (although it was ''sculptured'' into a rather dodgy draw with a decidedly designer Kanpur wicket) and I cannot see Ricky Ponting matching Graeme Smith's sub-continental heroics.

The Saggy Greens are going down and, to me, it's just a pity it's not Graeme Smith doing the burying. The Proteas have played ALL the cricket in 2008, with Test tours through Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, England AND home fixtures against the West Indies and New Zealand. They rightly deserve to be the matadors delivering the coup de grace to the wounded ring-rusty Aussies.

But alas alak, this isn't a fair world and Indian coach Gary Kirsten's going to be the only South African able to smugly brag he truly downed and dethroned the once-mighty Aussies.

Graeme Smith will only get to ''lick his pan'' with a lesser trophy of flogging the crestfallen Ricky Ponting later this year. Although victory Down Under will leave him with his feet up smoking a fat cigar in consolation that South Africa will have that ICC Test No.1 slot, they'll have completed their dream season and will have finally beaten the Aussies in their own backyard!
