Shahid Afridi’s team are pursuing a target of 440 which would be a world record for a fourth innings chase if they were to achieve it.

With wickets tumbling at regular intervals throughout this neutral test at Lord’s Cricket Ground, their chances of making history are slim but with Salman Butt well set on 58 and with nine wickets in hand they cannot be written off.

The Australia lower middle order and the tail had frustrated the Pakistan bowlers on day three with the last six wickets costing them 234 extra runs after they had whittled the baggy green boys down to 100-4.

With captain Ricky Ponting failing to reach fifty yet again on this ground, Pakistan must have felt they were in with a chance of victory but a maiden test half century for Ben Hilfenhaus put Australia into a strong position.

Pakistan are a notoriously fickle side who can thrill and disappoint in equal measure. A breathtaking run chase might be unlikely but you wouldn’t put it past them.
