India maintained their winning momentum with a 20-run victory over the West Indies in a close battle at Cuttack on Wednesday - and are approaching the World Cup with a positive frame of mind.

The result gives them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series but the inconsistency of the Indian batsmen was also exposed. Both teams struggled to establish themselves on a sluggish low wicket. For the spinners, it was a great day with Ramesh Powar picking up three wickets and other contributions from Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh. Fortunately for India, the bowling clicked but we are back to the old chestnut of one part of the team failing as the other succeeds.

In Nagpur, the batsmen had a great time, while in Cuttack it was the bowlers. It is this missing coordination that is plaguing Team India, and leading to inconsistent results. The coach and captain have to ensure that the batsmen as well as bowlers both contribute. In this way the team will look more assured.

For now, let us savour the moment. The West Indies put us under pressure last year and this series will ensure that India approach 2007 with confidence and with desire to win. The bottom line now should be, to maintain momentum and not lose focus of the ultimate goal.
