The announcement of a truce by the Tamil Tigers to prevail during the World Cup semi-final between Sri Lanka and New Zealand gives us a vision of how sport can bind a nation.
On one hand, we have the Tigers seeking political autonomy and yet are willing to set aside arms on this day. One hopes that Tamils and Singhalese Sri Lankans can recognise the potency of this gesture.
If anything, despite being Australian and hoping that Ricky Ponting and his team hold the cup aloft come Saturday, I would not be too upset if Sri Lanka win.
Sri Lanka have Tamil members in the national team and if they do win, it will certainly go far in allowing cool heads to exhibit the commonality between Tamils and the rest of the community. Maybe reasoning and compromise will be given a chance so that peace between all Sri Lankans is possible.
For such a small country, winning the World Cup should show that a united Sri Lanka is far stronger as a nation in peace and diverse ethnicity is a strength not a setback.
I hope everyone enjoys the final. May the best team on the day win !

What a fantastic article. For a non-Sri Lankan to draw on matters like this is exceptional.

As a middle person, I think this is the real battle. Auses CWC records are Unbelievable.Hayden,Ponting,Cleark,McGrath,Braken,Tait ... Fantastic. But SriLankans could do anything with their unique bowling attack and with their hero, and also my favorite ODI batsman S.Jayasuriyo. Thanx

It would be nice to know that Cricket will actually act as a peace treaty in Sri Lanka, we in many ways it is now. I'm hoping for more World cup Final days, so that both sides won't be Fighting in SL

You must have a Crystal Ball. However, things didn't go quite well. The pitch was rain sodden and SL bowlers could not do their business. Gilchrist was hellbent on going with a bang and he did. I was at the finals when I heard about the "terrorist air attack" on Colombo. Worried about my nephews & nieces who were watching the match from my apartment in Central Colombo, I phoned to inquire about their safety. My niece said they were on the roof top watching anti air craft bullets going around the sky and the power in the city was cut off so there was no tely and I asked why they stayed on the roof top if there are anti air craft bullets and she said " We thought it was fire works becasue Jayasuriya may have scored a century". If only. You are right, had Sri-Lanka won, it would have united the nation atleast for a couple of weeks.
