It's just not sinking in. India are the ICC Twenty20 champions. Against all odds, against all expectations, possibly against hope. I was only three when India won the ODI World Cup in 1983 - now I know what it feels like to be world champions.

Beating four of the best teams in less than a week was no mean feat by Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team. It seemed that this victory was ordained, such was the way India played. Very little that India have done has been predictable. They can be lions one day and lambs the very next. That is why this victory has been so sweet, because the most consistent team in the championship held aloft the trophy.

The pundits are out again, talking about the future of Twenty20 cricket in India, the two T20 leagues about to be launched, the future of the holy trinity. Please give it a break. There is a time and place to discuss everything. This is the time to savour the win. We do not need to sully something great that has happened to a cricket-mad nation after 24 years, two months and 29 days.

Let’s lay off the analysis for a while. Let’s stop pondering about the ODIs, comparisons with the 1983 triumph, rating Dhoni as a captain. All that can happen later. The truth is that India have beaten the best teams in the world and what made the victory sweeter was that we beat a gallant Pakistan team in the final and twice in the tournament.

The ICC was rightly blamed for the farce in the West Indies, but they need to be complimented for such a wonderful tournament this time round.

And on this euphoric morning, the news of the effigies of players of the gallant Pakistani team being burnt in Pakistan is very worrying. They have done their fans proud for what was a fabulous tournament for their players.

The Indian team will come back to a resounding reception. We can then start to think about the upcoming Australia series. For now, let’s rejoice and shed a joyous tear for India’s national team. They have made the whole nation proud.

After the party in India, there is the ODI series against the Aussies. Who will win? Post your comments below or send an article to Sportingo.
