I've always been irked by the claims of sports leagues in the USA. World Championships, World Series and such and such have a hollow sound and probably are worthless titles even to those sorry Yanks in their island of sporting isolation. Similarly, as explained above, I wonder what value can be attached to the current cricket (and rugby) rankings.
During the recent Rugby World Cup, the All Blacks were adamant they were unequalled at No.1. But as a South African I took the stance that, in context of the development of rugby, South Africa should get extra credit for the 'baggage' we carry in developing the game in Africa.
Now, looking at the cricket world rankings, and at the prospect of a big slide by Graeme Smith's Proteas, I wonder if the Australians would entertain my logical critique of their 'unfetted' focus on merely turning up and swinging the willow?
The Australians have, after all, no worries (or seemingly so) when it comes to development of the game of cricket, beyond obvious growth. When I look at my beloved Proteas, I am astonished by their workload and moral high ground earned in this fashion.
If the Proteas, in a marathon analogy, were running an ultra-marathon where the Aussies merely had to cross the 46km mark, they would be the ones carrying the world on their shoulders.
So who are the true champions, in my eyes? The lads doing the most for the sport - and that may be the Indians, the Pakistanis, Bangladeshis or English.
But obviously South Africa is in there with a great big "Howzat !"

do you think, as a supposed journalist, that maybe you should develop your story a bit better than just saying 'development' and joining the long list of 'yank bashers' that are out there. it seems the reason you yarpies are so average is because your all so stupid. have a happy new year though, and dont give up your day job greg smith

I'm not sure what you're basing these assumptions on, but if it helps to believe that you're somehow better than the Aussies because of some noble cause, the great - we'll just be happy with the silverware in the trophy cabinet. Now, if there were a cricket championship for chokers, then South Africa really would rule the world.

I don't understand where you are coming from I'm afraid. Australia offers a vast arrays of coaches, physios, conditioners etc to countries all over the world as we are trying to help raise the standard of the game worldwide. And also do not forget that Cricket Australia is always making efforts to foster the game in Aboriginal communities in Australia, much like what South Africa do with their coloured population. So where is your logic coming from mate?

Let's see - first article claiming that the South African loss to WI was part of black conspiracy. Next article claiming SA to be morally superior to the Aussies and comments on another authors piece denigrating Australians and Americans. Maybe for your next article, you could write an impassioned piece about how unfair it was that civilised nations boycotted SA during the apartheid years.

The yarpies are useless id rank them about the 4th best team when they play Aussie in tests the get smashed and in the big world cup games they always make fools of themselves! Smith is a useless captain and an average player!
