A day after the match and there has been much made in the Indian media about "Umpires cheating India".
Did the umpire induce edges on Yuvraj Singh's and Waim Jaffer's bat in the second innings or did they ask MS Dhoni to play no shot at a ball spinning from the rough? The truth is that apart from Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, the team played badly in the second innings.
Harbhajan Singh has always had trouble against the Australians. But there was no conclusive evidence of what happened and there are rumours that Mike Procter took the Aussies' account. But there was a judge from the ICC, too. And even in that meeting the Aussies showed their fighting spirit by outnumbering the Indians.
The blame should be on India for not attacking Australia on the final day by looking for wickets. Instead, they were waiting for when the Aussies would declare.
Wasim Jaffer played a bad shot in the first over but the Rahul Dravid decision proved to be a big turning point. He is one guy who could have drawn the match for India. Yes, the Aussies got really lucky but fortune always favours the brave - in this case, the Aussies going for victory.
Sourav Ganguly's catch was another matter of debate. Michael Clarke took the catch but Ganguly stood his ground. On air, Sunil Gavaskar said Clarke put down the ball down after rolling over. I am a genuine Indian fan but I would like to contradict Gavaskar on this point. Herschelle Gibbs has a habit of keeping the ball near him on the ground immediately after taking a catch. If Clarke took the catch on the bounce, then umpire Mark Benson got it wrong, not Ricky Ponting.
I actually believe Ponting played in the right spirit, calling back Dravid, who had walked. And he had a fantastic day as captain, bringing Clarke on as a gamble which won the match. His integrity should never be questioned.
India should have killed the game when Australia were 134 for six. They played wonderfully to take the lead but then let Australia score 400 on a turning Sydney wicket and the batting collapse in the second innings was pathetic.
As an Indian fan I feel bad but let's give credit where it is due, the Aussies are a great team.

i do not think you understand what you are speaking.

A very brave call Soma and I suspect you'll be attacked for it, but I agree that the aftermath of the game has lost all sense of proportion. There was much in the game to make you angry, but there were some terrific individual performances and they have been lost in this angry response. Cheers.

and yes, they would have - had Bucknor not slept during the thick outside edge from Symonds while he was @ 30.

BCCI is not demanding to nullify the match result. They are demanding to discontinue the two umpires who give 5 wrong decisions against India in second test match. The other demand is to revoke suspension of Harbhajan, as there is no proof for that and australians can't be trusted! Understand the issue first and write blogs!!!

Hi Soma, It seems you have lost your senses. Ponting plays the game in right spirit. BS...He did not walk when clearly edging the ball and then claims that Mr. Clarke(oh I am so innocent and lucky face)who clearly grassed it, caught the ball..how did HE KNOW for sure??? ICC and cricket administrators are ruining the game...why will a catach be called upon a fielders decision..Hieght of incompetency by officials managing the game...next time ask the batsman about LBW decisions...

Finallly some sense and not the emotive dripple that is pouring out of India, sure India was ripped off and got the wrong end of the stick on most decisions but to call the Aussies cheats and threaten to abandon the tour is just childish. Once again the umpire has gone against them with Harbhajan (as there was no evidence) but this is the job of the referee, its not a conspiracy against india.

I am sorry sir, but, do you really understand what you're talking about? I think you're completely missing the point.

Normally, I wd agree with Soma on giving the devil their dues but there are certain factors..Australia is by far the best team in the world. But, even Steve Waugh's team was brilliant prbbly better and more respected than the current one..Even they indulged in sledging and playing hard. But the following are some of the observations made by me 1. The umpires must take the major blame. No point blaming the non-walkers coz they have to walk when there is a wrong decision against them. However , Pontings annoyance at the wrond decision against him after benefitting from an earlier wrong decision sounds hypocritical 2. These days most teams are used to sledging , whats sad in this incident is Ponting going back on the philosophy of "what happens on the field , stays on the field" 3. True India should have bowled australia under 200 and batted the entire 75 overs. but how cd they...Umpires wdnt let Symonds get out when it was genuine and they wdnt let Dravid bat in 2nd innings (Ganguly's dismissal , the video

This all been blown out of proportion, without wanting to sound racist it seems indians have a talent for indignation. One week you are burning Laxman and Dravid in the streets. The next burning bucknor and ponting. Its rediculous. If you want to play the game in the right spirit, move on to Perth, win the match and show what great cricketers you can be. Ponting has done nothing wrong except not show due humility in the face of a lucky but hard fought win, i guess he was focussed more on the hard fought part, you cant blame him for that. 5 days of hard fought and great cricket(with good spirits between players untill the harbhajan incident)barring the terrible umpiring all coming to a miracle over from Clarke for victory and the series win, you cant tell me you wouldnt get excited. Contrary to many media reports players did shake hands, the aussies just took a few mins to enjoy themselves. If India wins the next two tests (wont happen)they can claim a moral victory. One final point, if Sharma could have b

I guess you are just trying to be different and attract viewership. Everyone knows Aussies pressure tactics and how they are playing with the psyche of Indian cricketers. Ponting is just turning out to be stupid. Andrew Symonds seems to be a very sensitive guy and seems to take nothing sportingly. It is so silly that he provoked Bhajji and then is aiming at Bhajji on the basis of his retort. Why should he have provoked him in the first place? I don't agree with you that India played bad cricket in the SCG test. 532 was a wonderful total. If you lose great players like Dravid and Ganguly to wrong umpiring decisions and observe that the opposing captain is playing a fool of you, obviously the team's morale will be down and your analysis would have been different if 3 wickets had not gone down in the 'lucky' penultimate over. Just trying to be different for the heck of it is very ridiculous on your part.

Soma, Oh! What an ill-advised cheap publicity seeker you are. This is what happens when people want to contribute without any signifcant knowledge of the game, in general, or the one in question. There are so many illogical arguments that they are not worth responding to. Just to mention one, Ponting is one of the biggest cheats in the game today and a liar too. At least surf the net and widen your knowledge before embarking upon writing on cricket. I wonder if you knew how to spell "cricket" a few months ago.
I think many of you are confusing bad umpiring with bad aussie sportsmanship. You really have to seperate the two if you are going to reach any meaningful resolution. If you cant accept that its the batsmens right to wait until he is given out then you have not read the rule book. Clarke says he caught the catch (if he knew he didnt then i would agree this is bad sportsmanship)and the umpire agreed, though didnt follow an appropriate process in my view. Bad luck India, get on with Perth.

Well done Soma, India keep blaming the umpires but they need to look at themselves Yuvraj, Jaffer and Dhoni havent scored many runs so there basically batting with 8 players and Dravid bats time without achieving to much i believe he should be dropped for Sehwag. Indias fielding is poor they give Aussies atleast 50 runs an innings not just in misfields but being to slow Matt Hayden is so confident he takes singles to mid off and mid on even though he hits it straight to them because he knows there slow and there arms are weak. India never take quick singles other than Tendulkar, Kumble gifts aussies aggresive batsmen runs by setting the field back without realising they still score at 4 or 5 an over through singles and the biggest problem is the fact they gave up when symonds was given not out simple as that they bowled pathetic brad hogg is an average batsmen and he looked like bradman because they bowled to short or full. Lets not forgot the series Aussie lost in India the umpiring was poor but this time

If the ball is grassed at any point of time that a fielder is trying to catch a ball or is trying to get it under control is deemed a no-catch. So even though the rule could be in theory the other way round, for Clarke and ponting took brilliant catches by the existing rule they clearly grassed it when they fell to gorund. Many a good catch has been deemed a no-catch before on this rule, the most famous one of course gibbs catch of waugh. Thats why the Indians felt hard done by. I cant remember a test match in the last 15 years which had 8 clear cut wrong decisions against one team as oppossed to one against the other team. I think this Aussie teams image has been tarnished beyond repair, but the tour should go on, for actually on paper Aussies have not done anything technically wrong!
As far as the unsporting behaviour goes, I can single out three, the symonds and Gillys appeal when dravid was out(actually not out) was appalling but many a team has done it. Batsmen not walking after thick edges, POnting, Symonds, Hussey, Clarke(after edging to first slip). POnting pointing to the umpire that Ganguly was out, another first in cricket. The wild final celebrations, in the second test match of a 4 match series in which they were always second best barring the last session, while Kuble stood in a distance waiting to shake hands. But again Australia is justified to play the way they want to, they want to win at any cost, but so is kumble and every other cricketing expert and fan justified to call it the most unsporting team ever!
Sure the ball touched grass, but only after landing clearly and directly into the palm of rickys hand and him having complete control of that ball, nothing was moving that ball out of his hand, it was a solid catch. Evidence on Clarkes was inconclusive, as they say "Fortune favours the brave" India from day 4 we playing for a draw, the Aussies for a win.
by karthik on January 08, 2008
Mr. Soma, 'If Clarke took the catch on the bounce then Mark Benson got it wrong, not Ricky Ponting'...what you don't know about this is Kumble and Ponting had a pact that if the catch on the ground is unclear, then they will take the fielding captain's word for it. You mean to say Ponting played fairly by giving it 'OUT' when the result is inconclusive.
Ponting gave it out based on Clarke saying he was sure he caught it. I think that after the bad umpiring you copped, it hurt more to see ponting give the out signal like he was a fifth umpire against you, than him just saying yes we believe it was caught, its the same thing. The only thing inconclusive were the replays which ponting didnt have. if Sharma could have batted it out, the test would be remembered very differently. Sharma's nick.
Ist Innings, Ponting LBW Bowled Singh. Huge inside edge. Didnt the Silly point, slip, bowler, keeper or short leg hear the nick? Surely someone did. According to the rationale of many on this forum they should have called him back or at least not appealed, yet they all went up. About Symonds nick, are you saying that all Indian batsmen walk when they Nick it? Give me a break, they only difference is that Symonds admitted he knew. If you have played cricket you will know that you always know when you nick it.

this is a bad day for indian cricket...not because we have lost...every indian knew that india will lose a match were politics is the height of select a player in team...yuvraj went to test his hormones with his g/f...0 and 0's to add..no one talking...dhoni cannot be a team man with yuvraj afetr the later snatched his girl...dravid cannot play his heart as he was snatched off his captancy ....tendulkar is happy tat he made his ton though the team lost...ganguly is happy becos he got his adversaries wrong...harbhajan is happy that he in team for all the wrong reasons and is prving he plays dramas better than cricket...and the media is fooled and being asked to cover the racial slur than the real reasons as to why india has lost...sehwag...dumbass...he shud have been born on a lucky day...to still tour with the team...kumble...realising that it is a shame to captain a BUNCH OF SELFISH SOULS!!

Sportsmanship, spirit and above all the attitude of the players matters for the growth of the game. There is no doubt that OZ shown a negative attitude and a poor spirit for the game .They created undue mental pressure on everybody including empires by durty tectics. The Champions are not clean champions .....as cricket lover we want entertainment...not frustrations

God pls forgive this ignorant writer as he knows what he is babbling... He is trying to show how smart he is by unintelligent, ignorant remarks with absolutely no idea of current issue on which Indians are upset. Does not deserve even 1 star rating. The writer should retire from blog writing along with Bucknor.
