Steve Bucknor has officially been removed from umpiring the Perth Test match. This is big victory for Indian cricket fans and the BCCI. But will the ICC board members do the same for all the countries and all future series'? That's the big question here.
Bucknor's withdrawal has temporarily stopped the problem arising from unsavoury incidents in the Sydney Test. But did the ICC do the right thing? In my view they succumbed to pressure from the BCCI following the three-match ban on Harbhajan Singh after his alleged racist comments directed at Andrew Symonds.
Sol do we now call the BCCI "dirty winners"? I agree, Bucknor made wrong decision. But the BCCI knew long before the start of the series in Australia that Bucknor was going to be one of the umpires. Indian teams have a long list of problems with this particular Jamaican official. They accepted his appointment at the time but after losing a match they find a scapegoat in Bucknor. But in manouvering his removal they diverted the media's attention from a very poor batting performance in the second innings.
The BCCI are the main money providers for the ICC, but that doesn't mean they should rule the ICC, whose decision to remove Bucknor was surely made to cool the situation and make sure that the tour is continued. But would they have made the same decision if New Zealand or Sri Lankan players had been involved? The recent series between Sri Lanka and England had some real bad decisions, especially from Daryl Harper. Would the ICC have made the same decision had there been an appeal?
Don't be surprised if Harbhajan Singh escapes completely without any ban for his racist remark. The ICC have taken the first step in supporting BCCI by accepting the appeal and clearing him to play in the Perth Test. If he uttered the word "monkey" to Symonds he deserves the ban. Even Anil Kumble revealed afterwards that he pleaded with Ricky Ponting to deal with the issue privately. This undoubtedly proves that words were exchanged. Now another appeal is to be heard and, judging by the way in which the ICC responded to the BCCI response, I am sure Harbhajan will be cleared.
This is the same ICC that tookno action over bad umpiring decision during the series and who imposed a ban on Darren Lehmann for a previous racist remark. The ICC also has to deal with the so called list of "elite" umpires on which Srinivas Venkatraghavan is the BCCI's sole representative.
Will the ICC take the same stance every time we get a spate of bad decision in a series not featuring India? I doubt it. Australia were also undone by poor umpiring decisions during their 2001 tour of India, notably in the Kolkata Test by umpire S.K.Bansal. Did the ICC take a firm stance and remove him from that series? The answer is a big NO. The BCCI and ICC are damaging the game's credibility.
With the BCCI dominating so much, it might be better to shift the base of the ICC from Dubai to Mumbai and make Sharad Pawar its head. And don't be surprised if the name ICC is changed to Indian Cricket Council.

" If he uttered the word "monkey" to Symonds he deserves the ban" If Symonds provoked Harbhajan through continuous sledging he definitely deserved the cursing he received. Symonds is equally guilty as Harbhajan and should be given an equal amount of ban. The major issue hear is Mike Proctor awarded the ban simply based on the testimony of three australian players (note that no umpire heard the so-called 'racist' comment). What happened to his impartiality when he takes only testimony from one side into consideration? The same mike proctor gave a 5-match ban to Rashid Latif for claiming a grounded catch. What happened to that precedent when both Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke claimed grounded catches? I seriously think the author of this article needs to get his head checked and maybe grow a backbone instead of slavishly sucking up to Australian players.

AngryIndiaIdiot i mean Man.Why is calling a black man a monkey in India not racist? Why are Monkey chants in India not considered racist? Why does the rest of the world consider monkey chants and calling a black man a monkey one of the most degrading insults you can deliver to him? For the record Symonds was not continually provoking "I said nothing Singh" because if he had we would have well and truly read about exactly what was said. In fact in this instance it was "who me Singh" trying to "wind up" Brett Lee having just hit him for 4 by tapping him on the backside as he walked past-a good move in the circumstances and "Symonds is a liar Singhs" own tactic of "mental disintegration". Symonds joined in to try and get back the initiative and questioned Singh's wanting to touch a man's bum.Good sledging by both men imo.For Singh to then call him a monkey well that's another story.Indian cricket was already embarrassed in the recent one day series not from the monkey chants because there can be AngryIndianidi
