The Sydney Test was a reminder of how bad things are in contemporary cricket. It is a trigger to do the right thing. Here are my suggestions.

1. Arm-twisting by individual boards: BCCI or any other cricket board should not pull out of a tour unless there are emergency situations. I feel sorry for the ICC.The BCCI's threat has set a bad precedent for other cricket boards to do the same when it suits them. The only way to break this down is to encourage competition. Recognize the ICL and allow it to grow in parallel. The BCCI should get on with its primary remit, to develop quality cricket and not count money.

2. Sledging: Sledging should be abolished. It compromises merit and performance and makes losing teams console themselves in a concept of unfair treatment. It also  puts pressure on players and hinders their performance. Cultures are different and performance is strongly linked to cultural attitude. The ICC should suspend fielders from fielding too close, based on how many times they are cited for doing so - an innings, match or series.

'Sledging should be abolished. It compromises merit and performance and makes losing teams console themselves in a concpet of unfair treatment'

3. Umpiring: In Tests, have four or five umpires and rotate them between sessions. This will cut down on umpire fatigue and poor decisions. I am sure Steve Bucknor's performance went down due to age, fatigue, pressure from players and so on. Bring in women umpires and use technology more and enable umpires to expalin decisions over a microphone.

4. Tours: Make it a rule that there must be two tour games before the first Test of a series to allow for acclimatisation. Abolish one-day series after Tests. Hold ODI tournaments every two years, zonally and then internationally. Don't play Tests alongside ODIs.

5. Technology:  Build indoor stadia and simulate daylight. Boards like BCCI and Cricket Australia have the money to do it. This will prevent matches being affected by the weather. And you can start a match in the afternoon and go on till 11PM.
