Cricket may be the gentlemen's game but it's also the big bucks game.
South Africa desperately needs revenue with huge challenges to develop the game in the country. The Australians are unsympathetic and although the Proteas will forego income by bowing to the Aussie terms to play in Australia during the peak season of 2008, the Australians are unwilling to reciprocate.
The incident highlights the poor diplomacy of the Australians. The South Africans feel the Aussies have put one over them by demanding South Africa appear in Australia on Boxing Day while they turn around and refuse to do the same.
The Aussies seem to be using their number one status to dictate the terms under which they will play. Cricket fans are concerned about the 'Australian way' and their preoccupation with themselves and their success at the expense of poor diplomacy.
South Africa have bowed to Australian demands before. The schedule of the 2006 Australian tour of South Africa was reportedly tampered with by the Aussies until they where completely satisfied. Commentators believe their strategy in insisting on playing the ODIs first gave them a good look at the conditions prior to the Test series, which they won 3-0 after losing in the ODI series.
Whatever the case, Australia's reputation is coming under fire. Their quest for success is casting a cloud over fair play. Their refusal to reciprocate, together with a penchant for creating controversy on the field, is giving them the tag of the bad boys of cricket.

The best solution to satisfy everyone is to allow a second Australian test team. One plays at home on Boxing day and another elsewhere according to the wishes of others. I can bet both teams can give others a run for their money. Australians fight for their demands at all fronts. It is their culture. Even their board fights just the way their team does. Too much of talent is going waste in Australia waiting for a chance. It would be prudent to float more than one test team and allow it to compete at all levels. The second team should be allowed to take part in major tournaments like any other team.

I think its more the point that no one cares for South Africa they would get creamed by the Aussie A and B sides plus no one wants to watch a world cup between Australia vs Australia A.
Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Brad Hodge, Adam Voges, James Hopes, Cameron White, Jason Gillespie, Brad Haddin, Ashley Noffke, Nathan Bracken and these are only a few players who cant make the test team i dont think it would be good for world cricket to be dominated by another aussie test side.

Sing while you're winning Brad ... just watched a wee video replay last night ... 434 ! Best part was when the Aussies were crowing about their GREAT 433, mocking our lads and then getting whipped ! Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm ... one thing we love more than winning, is dishing out humble pie !

There is no team in the world that can take on this Australian team. They seem to be way ahead of the rest. On one side you have Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. On the other side are the Aussies. Losing every game or winning every game can become boring. Australian cricket will lose money for lack of supporters so long as they get no worthy opponents. I see none around. That is why it is better to float a few teams around and make it level with teams according to their capability. The teams that do better get to meet the best cream of Australians. In the near future this is the only way Cricket Australia will be able to get spectators to be interested. The other countries have not developed a similar infrastructure to generate high quality players in abundance like Australia has done. I don't care if two or more Australian teams fight each other in a world cup. A team is a team and people like to watch quality cricket.

Partha, insults are one thing, pure myopia another. I neglected to point out your CAPTAINS review was fatally flawed as NOT ONE South African was included, but here again you show the same Aussie bias. South Africa has a 200 year history in cricket and just because you are unaware of it - doesn't mean it does not exist. Kallis, Gibbs, De Villiers and Boucher are the BEST in the world, in any team. Around them Smith, Ntini and Steyn (although not the worlds greatest)make an exception unit around which a world class 20 man squad is formed. South Africa quietly (as seen in our wars, battles, world cups, revolutions etc) rolls on, I think you're caught in the popular media 'spin & dazzle' mate. Pollock, Klusener, Dippenaar, McKenzie, Morkel ... these guys can't make the SA side and when they play as the SA A side are unbeaten in 71 years !

Greg is right. That 434 does prove that the Protea's are kings of cricket. Their failures in World Cups, and their inability to get close to the Australian's on the Test playing ifelds should be ignored. Yeah right!

Yeah right![/quote] cant agree with you more, the mark of a great team like South Africa is being able to choke when its required to win a crucial game, the mark of a great side like South Africa is not having any major tournament trophies in your cabinet, the mark of a great side like South Africa is winning 1 game in 30 and then making us all believe that they are the "world champions" -- Australia pales into significance when you compare them to South Africa, wish I can remember when Australia last choked in a game would have made them immortal if they achieved what South Africa would have. Australia has to work harder at trying to emulate how great South Africa is, personally I feel this is their Mt Everest and they may achieve the heights and we will never know how "great" Australia would have b

Someone ban this fool the s*** that comes out of his mouth is unbelievable, south africa won 1 game against aussie and for the record Gibbs, De Villiers and Boucher none of these players would make the Aussie team. Pollock is shithouse now last time i remember him bowling to Matt Hayden he was walking down the pitch slapping him over mid wicket your team is average at best the biggest bunch of pretenders ive ever seen smith possibly the worst captain in the history of cricket talks it up when he comes to aussie but looks like a fool because his team knows they cant be aussie.

Greg, I have tried to give credit where it is due, though it seems tilted towards the Aussies. But look at the records and I don't need to substantiate my words. For South Africa to reach their level, they need to be consistent in performance. Beating a Pakistani team that has lost all its teeth is no accomplishment. They are fighting each other more than play against an opponent team. Though India stands up to Australia sometimes, they do the same with Bangladesh too at the same time. Consistency is the only way to decide who is best. Let us see over the next few years how the South African team fares against all countries both at home and away. Beating dead snakes like New Zealand, Pakistan and Zimbabwe do not count. If SA can make the Aussies feel the pressure game after game, I'll believe they have arrived.
