It's been a controversy to say the least, something that could even have been expected on an Australian tour.
Things were said in the Sydney Test and charges were brought on Harbhajan Singh, who allegedly racially abused Andrew Symonds by calling him a "monkey". Harbhajan has been cleared of the racial abuse part but will be penalised for a lower classification of abuse as he did plead guilty to using some abusive language. 'Has competition, sponsorship and commercialisation of the game made it ungentlemanly?'I sometimes wonder what has happened to the gentleman's game. It used to be that cricket was a game and nothing more. There was an element of respect and a good delivery was acknowledged by the batsman, while a good shot was acknowledged by the bowler, all in good spirits. Umpires would intervene only to conduct the game, the batsman would walk if he knew he had hit the ball. So where has that game gone now? Has competition, sponsorship and commercialisation made it ungentlemanly in some way? The game has grown in popularity and it might just be because of the gossip and antics by different players and officials.
You never know, it might just be a way to hype up a series or generate more revenue from newspapers and websites. But it's not cricket any more, a huge money factor is involved as well.

The only solution is to fine players for sledging during international games. There should be individual and team fouls called for any unacceptable behavior in the field. Players should be fined or walked out of the innings or game. Team foul should result in severe penalties like losing an innings or a certain number of overs to play etc.. Australia should threaten to withdraw from the Indian tour in October if crowds taunt any of their players with racial gestures. It should be fair for everyone. Bring in women umpires and codes will become strictly enforced.

The difference between soccer and cricket is cricket is a test of courage while soccer is not.

Yeah the gentleman's game. Why back in my day……… Blokes were kicking each other up the bum; dropping their daks; days of cricket were called off by umpires until a visiting captain apologised; umpires were shoulder charged; captains dragged their batting partners off the field because they were unhappy with a lbw verdict; spectators shone the reflected sunlight in to batsman's eyes with mirrors; world cup semis were called off prematurely because the home fans were lighting fires to vent their disgust at their team's performance; players assaulted spectators for calling them derogatory names; cricket boards appeased apartheid by not calling off tours; players threatened each other with taunts of "let's meet behind the granstand"; bowlers had to be restrained by their captain from assaulting the opposition captain; crowds rioted because an unfavourable result was imminent; a bowling at fine leg assaulted by a crowd member resulting in him getting a dislocated shoulder; a 'home' umpire would celebrate a wi

I dont think Indians should be happy over this yet. Symonds was a pawn. The real culprits are Poonting and Proktor. Both are disgrace to cricket. Until those two are removed from cricket, India should press on.

I agree that sledging should be banned. While it provides a bit of variety for the home viewer, at the end of the day I'd rather see skilled bowlers and batsmen plying their trade without verbal harassment and intimidation. Highly paid professional sportspeople should be encouraged to behave in accordance with desirable social standards, and certainly not to inspire hostility from the spectators. This Harbhajan thing was a storm in a teacup - why didn't the umpires just say that since they didn't hear anything, everyone would just have to shut up and get on with it or go find a real job like us riff-raff.

Sam. You don't really have a clue do you. Harbhajan Singh and the BCCI have managed to get away with one here. Harbhajan has lied, and the BCCI has blackmailled the ICC and CA to "protect their honour". And by acting in this way they have shown that they have none. Harbhajan Singh and BCCI now want this issue to die away. Sure you will get some childish bluster from people like yourself and members of the BCCI (just to show what heroes they are). But what really needs to happen is for the BCCI to accept that they have conned the cricketing world, and to let the issue die away. Singh
