Harbhajan Singh and racism Part 2: Are we really learning anything?
After the latest unsavoury incident, expect another BCCI protest to back the spinner who made inappropriate gestures to the Sydney crowd. But more importantly, what is happening behind the scenes to lay this problem to rest?

Very often when you hear about racism in Australia, it is the crowd behaving in a barbaric way towards a player of colour – the Makhaya Ntini incident immediately comes to mind.
But in no space of time at all the issue is up again with India’s Harbhajan Singh being cited for racism, this time against the crowd.
The first incident, which has been well documented, was deplorable and very badly managed by the authorities. I always wondered how long it would take for a repeat performance. Given that Harbhajan is guaranteed the support of the Indian Board, are we surprised?
It makes you wonder about the whole 'racism' thing. Yes there are still idiots and clearly Singh is joining them but are we dealing with the problem in the right way? Are we dealing with the real issues or are we just papering over the cracks?
Obviously, this is all compensatory behaviour but what is Singh’s gripe, tinged with such a level of petulance that the risk of another ban does not bother him? What part is the crowd’s behaviour playing in all of this? Are we OK with the level of provocation that we call gamesmanship and what it is doing to the players? They are, after all, only human, although this is by no means a justification for such behaviour.
It is about time a tougher line was taken by the controlling bodies and that they were given the support they need from various stakeholders, not just in the sport but in society as a whole. After all, what happens out there is a reflection of that society.
I am afraid if this doesn’t happen, we might end up in a tragic episode of Star Wars. But, then again, I am not sure even Darth Vader would want to be involved in that one.

The media in every country is biased. They have to sell their newspapers and will not dare write against public sentiments. The second Harbhajan incident seems to have been cooked up by the Aussie media and it puffed out like a balloon. Controversies dominated the entire series this summer down under and the media made a kill (both Indian and Australian). I think they are all in it together - the BCCI, Murdoch, Indian media and the players. Tabloid level controversies seem to be liked by cheap audience. This is going to be more frequent since we can see that cricket is now being driven by entertainment values. When you being that in, media take over and stories are needed.

I don't know much about these incidents... but a combination of things is likely... (1) as Partha says, the MEDIA needs to cook up a storm (2) Players understand the RECIPE for stardom includes a bit of BAD BOY controversy ... this didn't begin with the Aussies, but they perfected it... and Singh is building his FAME in this fashion... as for the race-card ... this tends to pop up periodically, I've spotted a pattern, but the most important thing regarding racism, is that the majority globally, condemn the actions of a minority of idiots... don't you agree ?

let media be the judge of all ?how stupid is it to just hate someone like harbhajan only because he got support from BCCI. why cant things be taken logically rather than givin judgement based on some biased media reports ? racism against crowd is ha ha ha man get something good to write about.
