Was the Kanpur pitch doctored to suit India?
Although India came back to draw the series with South Africa, their performance at Ahmedabad was so bad it left questions about how good they really are. The Kanpur pitch really helped MS Dhoni's men, leaving this Indian writer less than happy about how his team managed to square the rubber.

India managed to come back and level the series with South Africa with a win at Kanpur.
Ahmedabad exposed the weakness of Indian batting against genuine seam attack - and the South Africans were lucky not to have faced any Indian pace bowler in form.
Had Ishant Sharma played at Ahmedabad, things could have been different and the Proteas would not have won so comprehensively. It was sad to see the pitch being doctored so blatantly to suit the home team in order to level the series. The Proteas had to take it and they did not whine or complain. They relied on their strengths and their pace bowlers made sure that India did not capitalise on their advantage.
Since the wicket was prepared to help India square the series, I will not give our team credit. I feel it is unfair to prepare a pitch so blatantly to negate any advantage to the visiting team. I wish all wickets in India were prepared to suit either side, so that bowlers do not get run down. In fact, the Chennai should be disqualified.India should be worried about a number of things - the BCCI's greediness seems to be growing by the day. They do not seem to care about the welfare of their players. There is too much cricket and the players will burn out with this kind of scheduling. No-one seems to raise any complaints against this - the Cricket players have no choice. At least the BCCI must take efforts to build a huge talent pool from which players of high quality can be taken while others rest. India needs double the number of quality pace bowlers to keep up with the demands. MS Dhoni is going to break his back soon. South Africa did well in this series. They came with a goal for their young team to get experience playing on the sub-continent.
The future for South Africa looks very good. Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Makhaya Ntini were impressive. Once Andre Nel returns, they will have a formidable pace attack. In my view South Africa are the real number two in Test cricket. If they can come to India and go one-up by beating the home team comprehensively, it shows their potential. India had to doctor the pitch to come back.
On a separate note, I don't know how the future of Test cricket is going to be, if IPL becomes a success. Many top international players may not show a keen interest in excelling in Test cricket. Their focus will be on early retirement and being available for a 45-day tournament. It would be prudent to make a deal with these players rather than banish them. The BCCI needs to be dismantled and replaced with a new system that runs things professionally, providing care and attention to its players, improving standards, and setting up up an infrastructure for talent spotting.
This series stood out as a healthy and decent sporting contest, a credit to both sets of players. But in some ways it was a boring series. I was surprised to see empty seats in the stadiums. This series, like the Pakistan one last November, was hastily inserted.
This should have been a stand alone series for the year, with probably five Test matches. India should change schedule to play one home series and one away series with major teams and other one-day tournaments with other teams.
I am glad it is over.

Graeme Smith was not told to bat first upon winning the toss with a gun pointed at his head. He took what he thought was a good decision and the team lived and died by it. You're absolutely correct in saying that pitches should never totally influence the game and that they must provide equal chances for everybody, but at the end of the day it's all about utilising the conditions well, as did the South Africans at Ahmedabad. If the Indians were able to bat comfortably enough to finish off the match on the same day, why did South Africa's players have problems? It's also all about having the right players for the day! Like Anil Kumble I am not a believer in 'moral victories'. A win is a win, regardless of the pitch. India were full value for their wind and it was well deserved, and although the series may be tied, India are still the better team and well-deserving of being no. 2 in the world.

Stop moaning!! The saffers almost lost their home series last year except for 2 hours of mayhem that saw the loss of RD/SRT and VVS. We dominated 8 out of the 15 days of test cricket. Here again, the teams were quite even except for the first day of ahmedabad and the last day of Kanpur. Nobody asked Kumble to bat on a green pitch and nobody asked the Saffers to play like fools when they were 151/1. What this series tells you is that the saffers are a tough team to beat but so are the Indians. Also, the SAFFErs were with their full team while one cannot say the same about the injury filled Indian team.. Final word about Steyn. He is a good bowler but cannot be compared with Brett Lee. Steyn picked up 15 wickets in 3 test matches, great stats!! But of the 15 wickets, only 6 wickets were of top order batsmen.....on the other hand, Morne Morkel picked up just 8 wickets. But 7 of his wickets were of the top order....

I've learned fans will be fans. So much rubbish is dispensed from partisan fans (including myself) its a laugh. I cannot imagine how Indians can claim their squad to be better than the Protea's, they struggled a draw AT HOME. That said, they are a great side ! The series was a non event, SA with sights on England, India eyeing the IPL. This isn't the full Protea's team, remember the controversy dogging the start of the tour, Nel, Langeveldt, Botha ? Please... get over yourselves... not ONE Protea's fan will tell you this SA squad is the best or strongest we've had... in fact, the opposite is true... its a medium quality South African team and India have struggled... that should put India into perspective.... I don't have a problem with the Kanpur pitch... it adds to cricket... players should be able to play on anything... unless you'd prefer everyone to become like New Zealand and only capable of playing on low, slow roads... I'm still laughing at them after witnessing them on a psycho-schizo concrete like Wanderers ... (And I wouldn't read to much into the Kanpur result... India weren't great on it either and the match situation flatters Dhoni's men... Nice tour though... no hassles, great country, nice people and good luck to India and Gary Kirsten (many were worried he'd get the sack... straight up !)

Greg, Much like you have mentioned about this SA team being not full strength, you must realize that the Indian team was not full strength either. They played without Tendulkar and their front line fast bowlers like Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma. Ishant, with his pace, would have wreaked havoc at Ahmedabad for sure. He is already admired by the Australians. If they certify anyone, they have to be up there in terms of capability. Zaheer can produce unplayable deliveries too. India had to make do with half strength pace bowling for most of the series. It is the bowling strength that helps teams win matches. And teams with good fast bowlers always have an edge. If India had fielded a full strength pace bowling squad, SA could have been on the defensive. But I will leave results where they are. As I saw it, SA dominated the series against a not full strength Indian team. The real test will come when your team takes on the Aussies on their home grounds. Let us see what materializes there. As far India, I have learnt not to claim any world titles. I know our culture and our teams. They oscillate between mediocrity and majesty with the same set of players. Any team can beat them and they can beat any team. They fail where all conditions favor them and then do the incredible thing when all odds go against them. We are still world champions in inconsistency. And that is the way we will be. If your team becomes the world champions, trust me, India will be the only team that will be able to pull the rug from under your feet. Ask the Aussies and they will vouch for it.

Greg When you say 'rubbish', talk about yourself :-). I dont think SAF dominated the series and I cannot say the same about India. That is why the series is 1-1. Interesting you talk about wanderers. Your team scored a total of 84 runs in a test match when you played India 16 months ago.... http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/statsguru/eng ine/match/249215.html As time progresses and youth and A tours increase 'home advantage' disappears. That is the reality. Your first test defeat this season to a weak Windies unit is an example. Your narrow home series victory is another example. As far as your BEST team is concerned, i have heard this whine often from many South Africans. When i look at your batting line up i cannot think of replacng anybody- Prince has had a great last 2 years and Amla the last one year. That leaves us with the bowling. I agree that Ntini isn't bowling great but then he won the second test for you. Partha I donot agree that the Indian team as inconsistent. This seems to be a baggage of the past. Sure, you cannot say they are as consistent as the Australians but no doubt that they are way way more consistent than most other teams in the world. No wonder most series that India plays are wins or close defeats (even when at the opponent's home). This was not the case a few years ago. The fragile teams of captain Azharuddin are truly and over......
