IPL is a hit, but is Test cricket under threat?
Money, excitement and packed houses - you won't find those ingredients on the fifth day of a boring Test. Could IPL's success actually damage the ultimate cricket challenge of Test matches?

The Indian Premier League has provided cricket fans with excitement and entertainment which other forms of the game cannot give.
For the first time in the history of cricket, players were auctioned and the team offering the most money nabbed the player.
The most expensive bid was for MS Dhoni and this is understandable as he is the captain of India and the project is a BCCI initiative with Indian magnates and media moguls.
Another point is the way some Indian players were billeted to play in the areas where the teams are based. Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Verinder Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh are playing in their local areas.
The international stars have given some great performances. They have shown the world that the Twenty20 format is the future of cricket. Without the pressure on losing a wicket, batsmen go out and engage in some crash, bang, wallop while competing for hitting the longest six in each game.
The games have in the main been exciting, sometimes going to the last over or even ball. And in today's fast-paced world, where everything needs to be settled quickly, IPL is the perfect remedy for India's huge cricket following. After all, who has enough time to sit and watch Test match for five days which ends in a tame draw?
Along with IPL, the ICL has been a success and the English board are looking at the possibility of a similar set-up to IPL

The IPL is a great crucible - bubbling franticly away, with unexpected results popping out every 5 minutes or so. 20/20 looks like it's probably here to stay UNLESS viewer fatigue kills it off, in my view. Remember, there was that problem in Hyderabad where there was very low view interest for a while in the IPL because they had had an overload of the ICL shortly before. WILL viewers stay switched on to the same level for the entire tournament? I find 20/20 very intense and demanding to watch - but it being on after midnight probably has something to do with it.... Players are also saying they find it more intense and demanding than ODIs to play. Having said all that, I think 20/20 is a great format of the game, although not as good as Test - which can have me on the edge of my seat yelling at the TV in the last over of the game. I'm very thankful for the IPL. I think mixing up the international players - at this very delicate point in cricket politics - has developed the Players (across nations) as a powerful stakeholder in this debate. (instead of being powerless as they usually are) Current cricket players retaining some power over the development of the game can only be good I think. Having said that, Warne, his brother and Kumble seem to be in the throes of cooking up some form of Cricket Crack (as opposed to 20/20 - Cricket Fast Food) - the isixes.... I want more Test dammit!!!. Actually, after the IPL, and the iSixes in July, so will everyone else!
