Proteas cricket fans are fiercely competitive and fanatical about their team's progress to the top of the ICC world rankings in Tests, which many punters predict could be a reality by the end of this season.

Only England and Australia stand in the way of Graeme Smith's men who have had the most incredible season thus far. The Proteas have arguably had the most arduous 18 months on the international cricketing calender and have home and away victories against Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand and Bangladesh.

They have also come away with a drawn series against the Indians in controversial circumstances where the BCCI received an official warning for poorly preparing the pitch for the drawn Test in Kanpur.

'The current England-New Zealand series is something of a cow pat in the clover before the Proteas arrive'

Many critics of Smith have said that the young South African could only be regarded as a truly great captain if he won this season's series in India and Proteas fans, in the light of the admonishing of the BCCI, believe he can bag his plaudits as well earned.

Smith should be regarded as one of the greatest Test captains of this era. He's maturing from those heady days when he accepted the captaincy at only 22 and, although not a magnetic character, he is the real deal.

At only 27, Smith has vision beyond his years and is up to a decade younger than his captaincy contemporaries - Anil Kumble (37), Michael Vaughan (33) and Ricky Ponting (33). And I believe Smith is going to make a pig of himself at the stats buffet before he reaches Ponting's age.

He has his eyes on the four-match Test series against Enlgand which kicks off in June. Let's be honest, the current England-New Zealand series is something of a cow pat in the clover before the Proteas arrive.

Vaughan and his lads look as shambolic as earlier this season and are currently making heavy work of the Black Caps whom the South Africans bagged as their own personal Huckleberries after severely whipping them earlier this year.

England needed to convincingly outplay the Black Caps to offer hope of the mildest resistance against the dominant South Africans. Into the second of three Tests, England are looking at a fourth-innings near-300 score to win after playing badly the first two-and-a-half days.

Smith, you can be sure, will be cockahoop. Andre Nel has rejoined the Proteas' squad and players have had good exeprience in the IPL. The tour to England is preparation for the big series against Australia in December.

Between then and now - remembering the disservice the Bangladeshi romp did the Proteas before India - South Africans have taken to emailing Michael Vaughan some encouragement.
