England's cricketers will be no Test for the rampant South Africans
Michael Vaughan and Co are making heavy weather of seeing off the weak Black Caps, so what chance do they have against Graeme Smith's in-form Proteas?

Proteas cricket fans are fiercely competitive and fanatical about their team's progress to the top of the ICC world rankings in Tests, which many punters predict could be a reality by the end of this season.
Only England and Australia stand in the way of Graeme Smith's men who have had the most incredible season thus far. The Proteas have arguably had the most arduous 18 months on the international cricketing calender and have home and away victories against Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand and Bangladesh.
They have also come away with a drawn series against the Indians in controversial circumstances where the BCCI received an official warning for poorly preparing the pitch for the drawn Test in Kanpur.
Many critics of Smith have said that the young South African could only be regarded as a truly great captain if he won this season's series in India and Proteas fans, in the light of the admonishing of the BCCI, believe he can bag his plaudits as well earned.
Smith should be regarded as one of the greatest Test captains of this era. He's maturing from those heady days when he accepted the captaincy at only 22 and, although not a magnetic character, he is the real deal.
At only 27, Smith has vision beyond his years and is up to a decade younger than his captaincy contemporaries - Anil Kumble (37), Michael Vaughan (33) and Ricky Ponting (33). And I believe Smith is going to make a pig of himself at the stats buffet before he reaches Ponting's age.
He has his eyes on the four-match Test series against Enlgand which kicks off in June. Let's be honest, the current England-New Zealand series is something of a cow pat in the clover before the Proteas arrive.
Vaughan and his lads look as shambolic as earlier this season and are currently making heavy work of the Black Caps whom the South Africans bagged as their own personal Huckleberries after severely whipping them earlier this year.
England needed to convincingly outplay the Black Caps to offer hope of the mildest resistance against the dominant South Africans. Into the second of three Tests, England are looking at a fourth-innings near-300 score to win after playing badly the first two-and-a-half days.
Smith, you can be sure, will be cockahoop. Andre Nel has rejoined the Proteas' squad and players have had good exeprience in the IPL. The tour to England is preparation for the big series against Australia in December.
Between then and now - remembering the disservice the Bangladeshi romp did the Proteas before India - South Africans have taken to emailing Michael Vaughan some encouragement.

Funny how the SA team will never get thr credit it deserves from people. SA lost a test to the WI, the destroyed them after that. It could happen to any team, and often has. The SA team are improving and as much as you guys dislike Smith, so is he. The Australian team has been on top for so long, but things are changing. The Indians and South Africans are closer than you want to realise. In ten years the top three will probably be these three teams. Knock SA all you want, but stats tell the truth.

Yarpies are only closer to Aussie because they are a weaker side and building towards another decade of dominance which hopefully isnt far away so what does that say about south africa they didnt gain an inch on Australia when aussie were at there peak they still got bitch slapped every game. If Warne and McGrath were playing we would still be smashing everyone they were the best spinner and pace bowling of the last 2 decades i know no other teams who have these quality of players but i challenge any team to take there best 2 players out and see how they go??? South Africa are overated they have performed against poor teams and only look close to aussie not because they are better but because Aussie are rebuilding. Aussies players retired in the last couple of years Warne, McGrath, Langer and Martyn now say we take Kallis, Smith, Boucher and Ntini i think it would be fair to say they would struggle to beat West Indies let alone compete with the current Aussie side and remain number 1 and thats the problem Aussie are still ranked number 1 if any other teams had 4 players retire they would struggle.

Brad, it is sad that you cannot give credit where it is due. Nobody has argued that the Aussies were the best team for ages and that they had some great players and still do. But the thruth is that they are only human. They are not walking over the West Indies in the cuurent series. South Africa, like it or not is on the rise. You may not like them or the players in the team, but they are a threat to Aussies. India as well are a building team and they should be respected as well. Do you also forget our younger players are rising up the rankings-just look at Dale Steyn. Cricketing fans from elsewhere can give other teams credit where it is due, Aussie fans seem to think their team will always be number 1.

Aussie fans like the fact someone is actually giving the aussies a run for there money most people are sick of buying tickets to the 4th and 5th days and the game finishing early, i just think the yarpies are talking themselves up bit early?

Based on the Aussie performance against a weak WI side, I would not be blowing their horns so much. SA have a very good side and this side have shown us that they are not the chockers of old. Smith, like him or not, is becoming a good captain and I also feel him being on the same side as Warne in the IPL, will add value to his captaincy. SA have some good match winners which are very underrated. It will be a good series.

im an aussie watching the 3rd npower test between the poms & kiwis & can not believe the umpires would change the ball on the 2nd request from the english captain after such few overs giving them a seemingly newer ball obviously helping the fielding side. Whats going on ? please help us understand Sir Ian or David Gower.
