Sachin Tendulkar opening with Sanath Jayasuriya: Why Twenty20 vision is putting cricket in focus
With two invaluable assets - record TV audiences and attendances at the games - the IPL is all set to become the most veiwed and attended professional league in the world. The bases, as they say, are really loaded for a charge at worldwide sporting dominance.

The success story of the IPL is nothing short of a fairytale with its buzz, unprecedented hype and record-breaking contracts for BCCI and players.
Amid all the hyperbole, one man has stood out, Lalit Modi the creator of the league. The ICC Twenty20 Championship might have propelled him, the ICL might have ignited him, but it's his determination that has led to the success of the IPL.
The tournament has been a huge hit in all quarters, the cricket has been of the highest class with top-class finishes, sixes, fours, entertainment and jam-packed crowds.
Everything is fantastic about the tournament with dream teams batting for the same side - who would have imagined Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya opening together? Australia never tested the tactical brilliance of Shane Warne but thanks to the IPL his brilliance as a captain and coach has been discovered.
The BCCI are set to make a profit of $100m, and SETMAX the official broadcaster and all the teams except Hydrabad Deccan Chargers and Bangalore Royal Challengers are laughing all the way to the bank.
The IPL is certainly a bigger hit than the World Cup held in the Caribbean in terms of television viewers and attendances.
The average attendance in the World Cup was 10,000, now look at these statistics for the IPL; Eden Gardens 73,000, Chennai 49,000, Punjab 36,000. Around 2.5 million people have been through the turnstiles and a billion have watched the matches on TV.
In short, the IPL will be able to challenge any tournament - be it English football, American basketball, football or hockey.
And if it can cultivate the game to China then the sky really is the limit.

There are estimates that as many as 50% of all of the people through the turnstiles did so with give-away tickets - kinda takes the gloss off those figures. It's been a successful tournament, but don't get too carried away with it.

Amrit keep up the excellent work with your series of articles..I also believe in the stanford vision that cricket can overtake football as the most popular sport on the planet within a decade or two. Your attendance figures seems accurate but still could you please cite your source? As it seems IPL has the second highest average audience attendance rates among all national sports leagues in the world with only NFL coming ahead with 68,000 average attendance...
McKenzie where have you heard that tickets are being given away? My folks back in Kolkata where fighting tooth and nail to get tickets during the earlier rounds but still couldnot manage it...The notion that tickets are being given away is a lie that has been formulated by the English press to hurt the image of IPL

I didn't suggest that people weren't trying to get tickets, but that team owners, sponsors, stadium managers, the BCCI were all giving away free tickets to mates and clients - probably at the expense of real fans. If it helps for you to think that it's the English media making it up then so be it. The actual attendance figures seem to be a bit rubbery anyway. TV ratings outside of the sub-continent are also pretty average - It's done well, but it is a long way from challenging soccer as the world game - even if China did embrace it.

Amit, do you have a reference for the 2.5 million number ?
by amrit doley on June 04, 2008
in our country the oficial figure is always very much lesser than the actual. considering the average official attandance to be 43000 ,i have mention it to be 2.5.million in 59 matches thoug in actual it must have been in excess of 50000 in average.
