Sportsmen are role models and their on-field actions inspire millions of fans. Today, some of the most popular names include Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Michael Jordan and David Beckham. All of them are great sportsmen but how many of them live up to the expectations of a billion fans?
When Beckham fails to score for England it may upset millions of English people; when Woods fails to win a Major, tens of millions Americans get upset. But Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar stirs an entire nation. When he scores a century, a billion Indians erupt and when he fails, a billion hearts sink.
Ask the poorest of the poor in any part of India and he will have something to say about Tendulkar, even though he may not know anything about cricket.
The famous quote: "If Cricket is Religion, Sachin is God" depicts how fans adore the little maestro. In a recent IPL match between Kolkotta and Mumbai, Indians at the 100,000-capacity Eden Gardens there was mad rush for tickets as everybody thought Sachin would be playing.
He is not only a role model for millions of Indians but also his team-mates who adore him. This is the level of popularity that he enjoys and shows how he is the most popular sportsman in the world. In spite of all the adulation, he remains a down-to-earth person free from controversy unlike other superstars.
Tendulkar talks with the bat, and therein lies his greatness. He has entertained a billion Indians over the past two decades and brought sporting glory for the nation. His 11,782 Test runs in 147 matches have come at an impressive 55.33 including 39 centuries. and in the one-day game he has amassed 16,361 ODI runs, including 42 centuries, a world record.
These statistics alone make him a great sportsman. But his ability to sustain such an incredible level of consistency with the hopes and aspiration of a country on his shoulders, makes him the greatest sporting icon in the planet.

Greatest sportsman in India - perhaps, but on earth? Get real. How can you possibly compare athletes across sporting codes. Sachin is one of the greatest batsmen of all time, but that is as far as it goes. His impact on the sport does not compare to the impact of Tiger Woods in golf or Federer in tennis. He has a great record, but he has never totally dominated the sport the way that either of those other two, let alone any one of a dozen other elite athletes. The number of people who adore him has more to do with other available heroes and his nationality than anything else.

The likes of federer, tiger woods, david beckham, sachin tendulkar and jordan are the biggest sporting icons. However none of the above have lasted more than 19 years in the business apart from sachin. David beckham is more famous for his looks than his skills as a footballer Federer has had a great 2003-2007, like the way sachin did between 1992-2001 2003-2004 2007-present, however he hasnt even survived has half as long as sachin, and sachin as been at the top or near the top of his carer for over 11 years being at the very best. Then tiger woods and jordan are overfamed because they are american. Plus in my view, golf shouldnt even be classed as a sport.

Agreed, Jordan and Tiger are more famous because they are american. However Tiger plays international players. Jordan only played domestic american competetion. Play in america and call themselves "World Champions" hehe

I think it is quite hard to compare one sportsman to another. Woods or Federer or Sachin or Jordan have spent equal time or energy in mastering their sport (and who the hell thinks golf is easy it demands huge concentration). True Sachin has accomplished a lot in a career spanning 19 years but the demands of tennis are different from cricket or football. Sachin need not be running all 90 minutes on a field. And by the way Jordon is not famous because he is American but for his skill. One needs to atleast go through partially before one can compare these greats!!

SPOT ON! When you take everything into account.....class,technique,style,complete batting, commitment, off field and on field behaviour,durability,consistency........and more! This guys got it all! NO SPORTSMAN IN HISTORY HAS OFFERED SO MUCH TO SO MANY PEOPLE FOR SO LONG... and to think he's still going on inspite of the billion fan madness!! Anyone even Remember kambli(perhaps as physically as talented as Sachin)?! Sachin is simply the GREATEST!!!

He may never have dominated the game of cricket as federer in tennis or tigerwoods in golf...The reson is so simple... He is just a member of a team of 11...unlike federer or tigerwoods who are playing in individual sports event...Cricket is team event and no matter how good a record you have ...he cannot dominate cricket..for its the team that dominates cricket...not the individual...To the person who has asked the question, may I ask can you suggest any other cricketer who has dominated cricket like federer or Tigerwoods...If your answer is no, there lies the greatness of Sachin... Best batsman world has ever witnessed...who in 90's carried a team of 11 in his own shoulders...a team which won only when sachin hits a century...tats what he is...simply great....And if your answer is Bradman...then you should be ashamed of your commment-'tat sachin has never dominated cricket like Nadal or Federer has'...
