Muttiah Muralitharan is a phenomenon. At only 36 years of age the quirky spin bowler is already crickets leadingTest wicket taker with over 700 victims and at the moment is THE number one spin bowler in the world.
He is set to break record after record in the next few years and will be feared by even the best batsmen in cricket. Never before in the history of cricket has one man's elbow been the centre of so much controversy. Murali has had to explain his strange bowling action on many occasions but he is certainly a cricketing legend and his record number of Test victims will not be beaten in the near future, that's for sure.
Murali was born with a slightly deformed elbow, and so he bowls without straightening his whole arm, no matter how hard he tries. Therefore his deliveries are different to your average off-spinner. Instead of using his fingers to turn the ball, he uses his whole body to get that extra 'spin' he needs to put his opponents in trouble at the crease. His facial expression when delivering the ball is fascinating to watch and shows the effort he is putting in. Like his former Test wicket-taking rival Shane Warne, Murali mixes up his deliveries to keep the batsmen second guessing, changing the flight, pace and spin almost every delivery. And, boy, does he cause some trouble!
Despite being a spin bowler, Muttiah is incredibly economical as he has so much amazing control over line and length. He is such a consistent player and you can only marvel at him. He has had most if not all the current Test batsmen in trouble at the crease over recent times and even the best are nervous at the sight of him warming up his peculiar bowling action. I love watching this guy play and it was great to see him sign for Lancashire. If only he could have played more seasons in England surely my Red Rose heroes would have finally won the county championship trophy after so many years.
If Muralitharan can trouble Test batsmen, then he can humiliate county players day in day out. What a great spectacle for the fans who definitely get their money's worth when watching him in action. Muttiah is the King of Spin,

No doubt Murali can do amazing things with the ball, but he was a chucker until they changed the laws to make him legal. As for striking fear into the hearts of the world's best batsmen, he has never had success against the Aussies and they are the best.
