From the extravagant Twenty20 World Cup to the exciting and heart-throbbing matches of Indian IPL. The Twenty20 format of cricket has  provided the spectators with the entertainment it promised.

IPL came about as the result of the formation of the ICL. Its teams were bought by some big personalities like Shahrukh Khan and Pretty Zinta, and for the first time in the history of the game players were offered huge financial rewards for a short series of games.

Players like Mike Hussey and Brendon McCullum became instantg stars of the game with quickfire knocks, bu there are some things in IPL that are one-sided.

Most of the teams have Indian captains and some of these captains, like Sachin Tendulkar, have been a big disappointment. And the most highly paid players were Indians like Raina, Ghautam Gambhir, RP Singh and Rohit Sharma. The BCCI responsed to this was to say that this shows that our players are the best.

But we can say that IPL is the future of cricket. Up to now the entertainment it has provided is enough to prove that. The boring and long four-day county matches are not going to stop the progress of the Twenty20 game as long as it can command the best players in the world.

But still there is room for improvement and as the game grows these mistakes will be put right. The money spent on the IPL is only one tenth the money spent on the NBA this year. The Twenty20 format will gain fame quickly and people are rolling up in their thousands to enjoy themselves.

Now it is possible that the IPL may be facing some competition in the future from a Pakistan Premier League and an English Premier League (already on the drawing board) and maybe an Australian Premier League.

If it does happen then the IPL will have to work hard to retain its players and fame. And if the other leagues provide more money then there'll be a battle to sign up the best. If this happens then most certainly cricket will have a bright future and also a big competition between the leagues will arise.
