They seemed to be the only team that is capable of beating Australia. The only problem is their inconsistency. With Lara, Chanderpaul, Gayle, Bravo and their bowlers in good form, they can cause big problems to the Australians. You can't discount the massive support they'll be getting from the home crowds during the World Cup as well.

New Zealand are a competitive side that could go futher than many expect - but - will need to find a middle order and find it quick! Also in ODI cricket, England are average and have been for some time

New Zealand is a side that is beset more by injuries than bad form. For the past ten years, they have always had problems with injuries to their top performers. Very rarely has Stephen Fleming has had the luxury of leading his strongest side. Given their strongest side, the team can give Australia a run for their money as they have shown in their previous series against them. I think that Daniel Vettori has to bat up the order. He is a much better batsman than how he is shown to be.

I do think the Kiwis are a bunch of fighters and have pushed the Aussies in the past. But they have lost 10 of their last 11 matches to them and to me they are weak on the batting front. Astle hasn't done well in a while, Fleming has done well recently but has really under-achieved as a batsman at the international level and though I like Marshall and Styris, they just don't have the quality batting line-up that other sides have.

Yes, India seems a good pick notwithstanding their current form. All pitches during the WC will be good batting pitches (due to pressure from ICC, WI board - there's just too much at stake for them and the game itself to have Champions Trophy type pitches, which produced dull matches for the casual fan) - and India have the most talented flat-wicket batsmen! (Yuvi, Dhoni, Sehwag, Raina) But England don't seem to care about ODIs and have a moron as coach (seriously Giles over Monty in the Ashes!? after calling Monty the best finger-spinner in the world just 2 months) NZ truely are dark horses - they add upto more than the sum of their parts.

well, west indies seems to be the team best equipped to beat australia. just that they are so unpredictable. srilanka yes, but india look a loong way off now that yuvraj's participation is also in doubt. no:4 in the world is james blake i think, the one who got roasted in the finals. Why did u say 1-3 though?

Hey dude, i think you have all the leanings of a budding sports journalist. But thats as far as I can say here 'cos I actually dont like cricket (or for that matter too many other sports). If you ever happen to start writing on sex or movies or something equally or more kitschy (crass), I would give you more insightful feedback.

Thanks for all the comments guys. West Indies recent performance has been good I'll admit, but I'm not convinced of their bowlers (even if Bradshaw is the number 3 rated bowler in the world). All in all, I sticking with the fact that any of the sides from 2-8 can make the semis, and England if fully fit can actually do something. I know they've sucked recently, but remeber these guys pushed the aussies in the ODIs before last years ashes. Srikar, you'll get your prize for naming world number four. Just saw some stat with the year end rankings and points- Federer was one with 1674 points, Nadalsecond with 894 and then can Davydenko, Blake and a bunch of others at between 400-550. Seriously, the top 2 are just so much better than the others, its not even funny
