How can you possibly call evans' season 'Lacklustre'? He had the most consistently high achieving pro season of any cyclist in a very long time. I'm not even going to bother naming his myriad podium, top 5 and top ten results spanning the entire season in tours as well as one day races (as if second in le tour by a handful of seconds and off the podium by another handful of seconds in the Vuelta one month later aren't enough to escape anyones criticism!) As a sportswriter summing up the pro season you should know what he really achieved. If you don't I suggest you look it up. These guys work way to hard to get such amazing results for some hack writer to then call their season lacklustre and cast aspersions on the validity of prestigious awards they well and truly deserved. Lance Armstrong, as great as he was would have struggled to do what cadel did this year, but was too pi**weak and media greedy (le tour being the only bike race that mainstream america seems to care about) to try his hand at big races al

What's your definition of lacklustre, Mark? I acknowledge he's a battler, and I admire his guts, but he's a team leader in a business where winning counts. The fact that he raced all season in some ways makes it even worse - couldn't manage a single victory after all those days in the saddle? The point I'm making (but probably failed to get across because in your words I'm 'a hack') is that champions should be more than just the most consistent rider in the peleton. Would Eddy Merckx or Bernard Hinault have settled for a season like Evans'? I doubt it...
Okay... Hack was a little harsh. I do apologise. It is on the whole an excellent article. As you would know, the line between winning and not winning can be complicated in cycling. Unless you have the strength on a climbing day to break everyone and win alone or as a sprinter to simply stomp the line it comes down to tactics and the dynamics of team motivation and cooperation. Cadel is certainly not the worst sprinter out of those that can climb but he is rarely as interested in cat and mouse games in order to save energy for the win as he is about riding for overall time, and he often finds himself working harder in front groups to make as much time up for the overall and thus sacrifices his own legs for the sprint. To boot he rarely has anywhere near as much support as the other team leaders as he has to hussle by himself when things get tough. He smashed everybody in that Albi ITT. Vino dogged him. By definition, I must concede that you can't strictly be faulted in describing his season as lacklustre as i
Thanks Mark, and I'm certainly not offended by a bit of debate. He was the moral victor at Albi, and it's also very true that his team support wasn't the best. It's also possible that history may show he did win the Tour, if the 'AC' in the Puerto files refers to the person most people seem to think. Let's hope that if I'm writing a review of the season this time next year I can speak not just about Evans' first Grand Tour success, but a victory with some style as well...
