The summer transfer window has come and just about gone and, for the most part, I reckon people would agree that this was by far one of the most interesting in recent memory.
From the Dimitar Berbatov saga to Robinho, Gareth Barry and Cristiano Ronaldo, the papers have had more than enough to write/lie about this summer. While the rumours seemed to come fast and furious every day, there never seemed to be anything to back up 90 per cent of the stories.
In the end we were left with a handful of transfers, a shirt saga, and one sulking striker who couldn’t seem to get his own way. Like many, I’m glad the window is about to close. If anything, it allows everyone to finally concentrate on the task at hand – and that’s winning the league title.
As we move forward, I think it’s only right to look back on the hilarity of the transfer window, and the top FIVE stories that shaped the summer.
1. Kevin Keegan promises FOUR quality players: Yep, that’s right. Keegan promised Newcastle supporters not one, not two not three, but FOUR quality signings when the summer started. How many did he produce? I believe the number is ZERO. Not only that, but he nearly lost Michael Owen at one point, had to watch James Milner leave for Villa, and then struggled to find his way in a less-than-booming transfer market. At least King Kev secured a draw against Manchester United on the opening day. That makes up for the lack of quality over the summer, right?
2. Chelsea put Robinho’s shirt on sale in the club shop: Now THIS is what the transfer window is all about! You know a club is at the top of their game when the club shop finds a way to potentially ruin a transfer. After flying to Madrid to secure one of the biggest swoops of the summer, Chelsea PR get wind of the move and decide to put Robinho’s shirt on sale before he has even signed for the club. Whoops! Real Madrid hear about the situation and promptly raise their valuation. I’m sure Roman loved hearing about that!
3. Berbatov signs a Manchester United shirt while on international duty: This could be the worst of them all. After proclaiming his love and admiration for everything Manchester, Dimitar Berbatov decided to take the transfer situation to the next level in fantastic fashion. Instead of voicing his opinion in the press, Berby did the unthinkable by signing a United shirt while on international duty for Bulgaria. Talk about slapping your current employer in the face!
4. Cristiano Ronaldo saga with Real Madrid: This was probably the most talked-about transfer rumour in football history. Not only was the rumour going on before Euro 2008, it also found its way into the tournament itself. It takes a big ego and a big club to infiltrate one of the greatest tournaments in the world. Luckily the situation was over before it got really ugly. Real Madrid were resigned to the fact that they’ll have to wait another season for their man.
5. Gareth Barry to Liverpool saga: OK, now this saga could in all seriousness rival Ronaldo for the most ridiculous story of the summer. Rafa Benitez and Martin O’Neill were at loggerheads for the better part of two months over Barry’s future. Aston Villa wouldn’t budge on the price - and neither would Liverpool. And just when you thought the deal was going to go through, Villa pulled the plug and said the deadline had passed. They proceeded to start the clock again two days later by telling Liverpool they could have all the time they needed. And yet the deal still never got done. Good riddance to the Barry saga!

Spurs must be very proud. 19th is a wonderful position to be when recruiting players. I suppose they told pav that they like to give the rest of the league a good head start. Jokers. COYS!

I reckon "pav" is about as concerned about our league position after THREE GAMES as the rest of us. You are aware that the season is 38 games long? Or is even that crucial fact beyond your very limited understanding of football??
Fair point Jim. Tottenham have about as much attraction as chessington world of adventures. A team thats suppose to be competing for 4th place in the leagure this year. 3 games it may, but thats 8 points dropped already so a fair bit to catch in prem terms. Welcome to reality spuds. You know your place!
