I have asked the question several times before about the disappearing money at Watford. It has been met with a mixed response, but I have always felt uncomfortable with where the Premier League money and transfer proceeds have gone.
I am interested to see that former chairman Sir Elton John has now raised the same issues. In an interview with the BBC the legendary musician said:
"We know from other clubs that when stability and confidence go there is danger of plummeting into freefall. I fear we could be facing that catastrophe. The chairman and leading shareholders have made it clear they wish to sell the club and this comes after a profit of nearly £8m last year. What has happened to the money from the sale of some of our best players and the parachute payments?"
Big transfer fees have been received for Darius Henderson (£2m) and Danny Shittu (£2m) and this followed on from the sales of Ashley Young and Marlon King for a combined fee of £12m. Despite that and the parachute payments from the Premier League, Aidy Boothroyd has been given nothing to spend.
Sir Elton went on to say;
"The manager and the players have my full support. But it is clear that the playing staff has been left threadbare after the sale of leading players over the last year or so, and even now I understand that there are plans for further player sales in January. Confidence must be brought back to the playing staff and a real sense that there is a future at the club. If the directors do not have that optimism, they should go."
The results of the financial mess at the club are clear for all to see as Watford struggle just one place above the Championship relegation zone. The squad is threadbare, to say the least, and there appears to be no prospect of adding to it. In fact, if Sir Elton is correct, we could sell our only saleable assets in January.
There are definitely questions that need to be answered but I guess they never will be. It will be best for all concerned if the current board can find someone to buy them out as soon as possible.
As a Watford fan the last couple of years have been deeply depressing. The excitement of the early season results last season that gave us the false hope that we could bounce back to the Premier League is now a distant memory. Since October last year Watford have pretty much been in freefall and the money that we all thought would help to save us has mysteriously disappeared.
Any chance of rescuing the club again, Sir?
