There’s every reason to believe that the telephone lines at White Hart Lane have been sizzling, and Harry Hotspur’s mobile has been crackling non-stop this week.
The message has gone out to every Tottenham scout in Europe: You’ve got six weeks to find me another Peter Schmeichel, a Brad Friedel, a David James or, better still, another Pat Jennings.
Heurelho Gomes’ days at Spurs are numbered. The unfortunate Brazilian (and you can’t say that about many players from that part of the world) has blundered his way into virtual oblivion. His stay at The Lane has been short and, unfortunately, not very sweet.
Poor old Gomes seems to reserve his best bloopers for when he’s on telly - his best so far presented for millions of viewers last week when he simply didn’t react fast enough to a cross from Fulham’s Simon Davies, which took the slightest deflection off Jonathan Woodgate’s head and slipped into the net through the keeper's fumbling fingers.
It’s got to be said that Concord-konk Gomes is a great shot stopper – from distance. But stick him in a crowded goalmouth with two or three tough defenders and strikers hurling themselves at anything within striking distance, and he’s a little boy lost. It’s one of the hazards of the Premier League.
Harry Redknapp has identified the problem – although he could have asked any Spurs fan what the team needed most – and the one certainty for the January transfer window is a new goalkeeper for Spurs.
He’s already had a word with Sir Alex Ferguson about Ben Foster, but that’s a non-starter as Fergie has earmarked Foster as Edwin van der Sar’s successor at Old Trafford, and rates Foster as the best English keeper in the Premier League.
He’d love to get David James from his old club Portsmouth, but again Pompey have made it clear that there’ll be no welcome mat at Fratton Park for their old boss if he comes a-callin’. And especially for striker Jermain Defoe, who he nicked from Spurs when he was boss at Portsmouth.
Here are a few of Europe’s high-fliers who might well be under the Redknapp microscope on the run-up to the New Year sales:
Andres Palop (Sevilla): Hardly a long-term investment at 35 but Spain’s third-choice goalkeeper is in great form, helping to push Sevilla into second spot in La Liga. He was understudy to Santiago Canizares at Valencia for several seasons, but has a firm hold on the No.1 spot at Sevilla.
Hugo Lloris (Olympic Lyonnais): Six-footer, solid and reliable. Not new to the Spurs radar screen as he was on the list to replace Paul Robinson a couple of years ago, and at the age of 22 a genuine contender.
Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen): The 6ft 3in giant’s exploits are behind Bayer Leverkusen’s rapid rise to the top of the Bundesliga and the last piece of the Berlin Wall still standing. But there may be a better option in Germany right now...
Daniel Haas (TSG Hoffenheim): Another six-footer with Germany’s shock outfit of the season so far. Hoffenheim are joint top of the league and the moment, ahead of the mighty Bayern Munich, and Haas is grabbing all the headlines.
Brian Van Loo (FC Groningen): Conceded only six goals in 11 games with the team in third spot in the Erdivisie. Another short-term stopper but Redknapp has never been an age-ist in his transfer dealings. And if Spurs what to keep their Brazilian/Spanish interpreter on the payroll, how about...
Helton da Silva Arruda (FC Porto): At 6ft 2in, big enough to look after himself in penalty-area skirmishes. Helton (for short) was a member of the Brazilian squad that won back-to-back titles in Copa America in 2007.
Best of luck, ‘arry Boy!

I still recon that somewhere in Gomes is a great goalie waiting to show us what he is capable of. The guy has had his confidence shattered and needs our support not our ridicule. Lets back him and help him through the bad patch and see if that great goalie emerges in the second half of the season.

Gomes is agreat shot stopper but his decision making is rubbish, he has got to be replaced, or at least rested, the defence cannot have any confidence in him. I would like a good commanding keeper so that cuts out any English except maybe FosterI still think we will get out of relegation trouble, but a no1 goalie is our main priority

I personally don't think hes good enough for spurs with his recent blunders. I would love to see Spurs go for Sunderland's number one Craig Gordon.

problem with most of those goalies is that we can't use them in uefa as they'll be cup-tied, i would hope 'arry would look to some1 with actual premiership experience, not ben foster also will be cup tied after the celtic game, jussi jaskilinin would be a good choice, not greeno either given always injured along with kirkland, joe hart would b alright but unsure if we could get him

we should have stuck with robbo. he was and still is one of the best goalies in the league. but he got a bad press and now hes back to his usual selk at blackburn

Even on form Gomes is a liability. Go get Pletikosa from Moscow, he can link up with Pav again and his mates Corluka and Modric!

........araza daza,Robbo might have been descent 3 seasons ago but he's woeful since and still is now and we'll prove that this weekend.Honestly the blind devotion to that chap is comical.

i believe we should stand by Gomes as Harry has said.......he has made some outstandings saves and has to work on set plays, corners and more in his play so work to build more awarenes in EPL pressurse etc ......it appalls me that eveyrone jumps on the bandwagon and dont remain loyal to Gomes .his confidence needs support....... ALL! players go through a low point etc more work to be done by his coach to maintain focus and mental strength no ones is perfect are you?

at least 4 of those 6 will be European cup tied, so are no go's in Jan...Helton is a non starter because you wouldn't replace one Brazilian gk with another. Ben Foster is yet to prove his fitness over a full season.

I am sorry, but although I think you are right about giving Gomes until the end of the season to see how good he is, it will all be too late if we are relegated into the bargain. Keep him and I believe that will become a certainty--one which we cannot possibly contemplate. I hear that Harry has called back Ben Alnwick from a loan spell with Carlisle. He has now had plnty of experience playing first team fotball, and although I have never seen him play, he can me no mug, or we wouldn'thave bought him in the first place. Also I believe he is an under-21 international--that should be good enough reason, and should he prove to be a good goallie he will save us plenty of money.

Why don't you guys give Cesar Sanchez a chance? He was good enough to bench Iker Casillas at Real Madrid and also has a Champions' League medal to his credit.

Dear TH fans, As a PSV fan, I would like to say that it is hartbreaking to see that Gomes isn't performing as excellent as he did in eindhoven. In Eindhoven he is a class A star. If ever you guys get enough of him, he is more than welcome to return back home! Honestly, we really miss him. Though we wish him the best with you, send him home if it just doesn't work. With the utmost respect,

FANTASTIC KEEPER! when gomes first came to spurs he was a brillant keeper who came out for everything (and would always get a hand on the ball) as well as pulling of fantastic saves. away to stoke he had taken out corluka twice and thats where it all began. match of the day didnt stop slagging him off and next morning the papers started to have a go. this then made hes comfidence drop and with that on hes mind gomes shouldnt have been playing after the stoke game due to brused ribs. since then he had made a few bad mistakes like away to fulham and they all didnt stop rinsing him even though the injured keeper pulled off world class saves. so this now makes every1 think hes bad even though he pulled off great saves. but now that is all in the pass, he is fit to be playing and has hes confidence back he is fantastic like he has always been. comes out for everything, great shot stopper etc. think of the games he has saved us and ask yourselves is robinson better? dont be silly. man utd home and away he saved us chelsea home and away he saved us west ham home and away he saved us portsmouth away he stoped crouch winning headers
