Many people will say that Michael Owen had to take Manchester United's offer as the best chance of resurrecting his World cup dream in Fabio Capello`s England team.
But the truth is he will most likely be a bit-part player for the Red Devils and would have been much better served by signing for one of the lower Pre mier League teams he was talking to when United's offer came in.
At Hull City, for example, he would have played every injury-free minute and would have had a chance to really prove if he still has what it takes to cut it at the top level. Instead, he'll likely be reduced to coming on in the 80th minute to give Wayne Rooney and Co. a bit of a rest.
When I see the picture of Owen grinning holding the United scarf above his head, it shows just how low the little fella has fallen from his heyday as an Anfield idol.
Some may even say that he never really was an Anfield idol as he never was as close to the fans as his contemporaries Robbie Fowler or Ian Rush. That is true to a point but he was revered by the Liverpool faithful in the early days.
There were many great moments and some great goals, but that was all soured when he forced the then new manager, Rafa Benitez, to sell him for a knock-down price to Real Madrid in 2004.
And he has soured that relationship with the Liverpool fans after agreeing to join our arch-enemies.
Remember, this is not some foreigner like Gabriel Heinze or Carlos Tevez but a player who came up through the Liverpool youth set-up, so he knows exactly what it means to the Liverpool faithful to cross the divide.
But there is one ray of sunshine in all this, and it is that without bad luck, Michael Owen would have no luck at all.
He left Liverpool for sunny Madrid to play regularly in the Champions League, the very same year that Liverpool lifted the trophy on that glorious night in Istanbul in a fixture in which most players can only dream of playing.
Now we can all see where his latest bout of luck has left Newcastle United. So let's all hope that Owen's lucky streak continues with Manchester United. Relegation might be hoping for a little too much, though!

I'm an LFC fan and i'm disgusted reading this. Leave him alone for god's sake. LFC doesn't want him, and man utd does, then so be it. He needs to earn his money and he did a good job during his time in Liverpool. Fcking grow up man.

I'm a Liverpool fan and it sure as hell hurts to see him in a United kit, but give the guy a break, if Liverpool don't go in for him and he is faced with a choice of Hull or Man Utd, is he supposed to give up a chance to revive his career just to keep us happy?

What a crap obviously bitter article. How can he prove he still has what it takes to cut it at the highest level when playing for a club that will be fighting relegation with no quality players to support him. That's hardly the highest level. The highest level is playing at a club with a lot of very good players, a club challenging for honours domestically and european, a clubn where he will have to play well to get time on the pitch. We've already seen what happens when he is at a struggling club. Hull would even be a step down from Newcastle. If he stays fit he is very good value. Simple as.

lets hope owen can help utd win the league something he never done at liverpool and too rub it in more score the winning goal at liverpool
get off owen back when he was at liverpool he helped you win lots of cups but never the league but maybe he will at utd
Too right. In fact any pool players who would like to hold a premier league trophy should move to Old Trafford

To hate a man so much over a game of football is pretty pathetic. It highlights the problems we have within society wherein we need to live our lives through the lives of others to justify our own sad little existence. When the late great Shankly said football is more important than life and death only the mindless took him to mean it so literally.

I'm delighted to see so many Liverpool fans on here with the good grace and football knowledge to give Michael Owen a break. The sincerity and sense in those comments just shoes the Author of this piece for what he is, a bitter and resentful fan. He may be a Liverpool fan but his comments are clearly not indicative of the 'knowlegable' Liverpool fans who are also fans of FOOTBALL. Question to the author - if Owen means so much why did Liverpool not take him back for free???? As a Liverpool fan of course you can laugh at Owen and Manchester United if the deal fails but in the meantime why not shut up and concentrete on your own team!

I think we need to get past this. As a lifelong red, I think the worst that Owen did was signing for Newcastle instead of us a few years back. But then again, it was always down to making sure he played regulary enough to ensure he played for England. I think he showed his true colours then and frankly i do not believe he is any of Liverpool's concern now. With his injury record Michael never reached the dizzy heights that was once predicted for him. If he stays injury free at united then Sir Alex has a real prize on his hands. that's a big IF though. Why red fans are complaining about Michael's decision to sign for the biggest club in England instead of the likes of Hull is just senseless. He has a choice to fight for trophies or fight a relegation battle? My god that isn't even a choice worth talking about. However had he chose United over Liverpool then i would have been annoyed and would then have understood all this anger. As far as i know, Liverpool were not even interested. That should be the end of the story in my mind.

What a waste of words in this article. The day I felt sorry for Owen and when I wished him good luck if he ever left (Houllier's) Liverpool FC was a midweek match against Spurs. He was our lone striker and all we did was hoof the ball up to him. Owen was so desperate to get the ball, he'd come back as far as the goal area. No histrionics, no shrugging of the shoulders, nothing. The lad is a true pro and he owes Liverpool FC nothing. However, if he thinks moving to the Scum will enhance his career, he is sadly deluded. The only mark he'll make is the hard skin on his arse, sitting on the bench.

zzz i hate owen now.. I used to grow up believing he was a KOP legend.. when he signed for madrid/newcastle... it didn't feel no where near how he signed against manchester united.. red devil bastards... well im just an anti-united fan thats all.. :D.. go chelsea, liverpool, arsenal, barcalona, everton, milan or any other team that'll kick man u's ass or give them a hell struggle like last season in the cl final.. now, i dont think owen will never ever be remembered in anfield like he was once, and i doubt he'll make a name for himself in united, probably the man who joined united for $$ and fixing his carreer.. the bitter rivalry between man u-liverpool is so much worser than everton-liverpool... i might just go for man city/tottenham next season @.@

Personally, all those who are saying "give him a break" aren't true Liverpool fans then. He grew up preaching his love for Liverpool, saying it was the one club he strived to play for, and how he'd loved every single thing about the club. If this was true, then why did he drop Rafa in the complete sh!t in 04'? Someone explain this to me. And then, having totally ruined his career, admittedly not his own doing, his knee was a very unfortunate injury. But he's had AMPLE time to re-gain his career and get back on track, both of which he has failed to do so. However, putting that aside, he's shown he is only after money, and try and get back in the England squad which everyone knows is not going to happen. He would, as people have stated elsewhere, been much better suited at Hull City, where again, as stated earlier, would have got to play every single match he was fit for. Only when a player can play in every game and have constant play can they show there true potential. Whereas now, he's gone against everything he ever lied about as a youth coming into the Liverpool squad, joined Manchester United where he will only get, I'd say.. about 10 games next season? Possibly near 20. If not that. He will be a 2nd/3rd string striker. He will not show the potential to get back into the England squad, and being totally honest, does not deserve a place back in there, he's simply not good enough anymore. So I think that everything my fellow Liverpool fans are giving him, he deserves, he's completely destroyed any respect for him we had. He's a disgrace to the loyalty of football. And really does deserve his place in such a treacherous team. Liverpool FC Fan.
