As we all know, Manchester United snapped up Michael Owen on a free transfer last week.

I've been reading a lot of user comments on various websites, and I've noticed that a lot of fans, and not just those at Liverpool, consider his move one of betrayal to Liverpool. Some are saying he betrayed them a long time ago when he went to Real Madrid for a fee that was much lower than his true value.

The way I see it, Owen has not betrayed Liverpool at all. Just because he came through the ranks as a youngster, and was very succesful with them during his time there, doesn't tie him to the club five or six years after leaving them.

His career hasn't been going uphill since he left Real Madrid. Liverpool didn't offer him a chance to come back, so isn't there a suggestion here of betrayal by Liverpool?

Come 2009, and Owen's contract at Newcastle United was coming to an end. Newcastle are in fact relegated, and in his four years at St James' Park he struggled with injuries and poor performances whenever he had the chance to play.

His career wasn't going anywhere, and at the age of 29, players start to worry about their future as they have only a couple of years ahead of them. Even less when they are injury prone like Owen.

His time at Newcastle was a nightmare, and many people lost faith in him, criticised his every performance and his every injury. Liverpool once again didn't offer him any chance to come back; didn't show their "love" by offering him a reduced contract and a chance to ignite his career.

They did for Robbie Fowler, so why not Owen?

Sir Alex Ferguson stepped in and offered Owen a contract. When that kind of offer comes along, compared to other clubs such as Hull, Stoke, Everton and maybe Aston Villa, I think any player would know what to do.

Betrayal? No! His connection with Liverpool had gone; they showed no love for him, so why should he show commitment to them?

It wasn't as though United and Liverpool were both offering him a contract, and he ended up choosing United instead of Liverpool. If that had happened, then yeah, it MIGHT be considered betrayal. But this guy has been offered a perfect chance of re-ignite his career and he has taken it without hesitation.

It's going to prove a great deal for both player and club; a chance to revive his career and show the world that he is still a talented footballer who can still bag goals.

And if you ask me, I rate it as good as the Henrik Larssons loan deal.
