As we all know, Manchester United snapped up Michael Owen on a free transfer last week.
I've been reading a lot of user comments on various websites, and I've noticed that a lot of fans, and not just those at Liverpool, consider his move one of betrayal to Liverpool. Some are saying he betrayed them a long time ago when he went to Real Madrid for a fee that was much lower than his true value.
The way I see it, Owen has not betrayed Liverpool at all. Just because he came through the ranks as a youngster, and was very succesful with them during his time there, doesn't tie him to the club five or six years after leaving them.
His career hasn't been going uphill since he left Real Madrid. Liverpool didn't offer him a chance to come back, so isn't there a suggestion here of betrayal by Liverpool?
Come 2009, and Owen's contract at Newcastle United was coming to an end. Newcastle are in fact relegated, and in his four years at St James' Park he struggled with injuries and poor performances whenever he had the chance to play.
His career wasn't going anywhere, and at the age of 29, players start to worry about their future as they have only a couple of years ahead of them. Even less when they are injury prone like Owen.
His time at Newcastle was a nightmare, and many people lost faith in him, criticised his every performance and his every injury. Liverpool once again didn't offer him any chance to come back; didn't show their "love" by offering him a reduced contract and a chance to ignite his career.
They did for Robbie Fowler, so why not Owen?
Sir Alex Ferguson stepped in and offered Owen a contract. When that kind of offer comes along, compared to other clubs such as Hull, Stoke, Everton and maybe Aston Villa, I think any player would know what to do.
Betrayal? No! His connection with Liverpool had gone; they showed no love for him, so why should he show commitment to them?
It wasn't as though United and Liverpool were both offering him a contract, and he ended up choosing United instead of Liverpool. If that had happened, then yeah, it MIGHT be considered betrayal. But this guy has been offered a perfect chance of re-ignite his career and he has taken it without hesitation.
It's going to prove a great deal for both player and club; a chance to revive his career and show the world that he is still a talented footballer who can still bag goals.
And if you ask me, I rate it as good as the Henrik Larssons loan deal.

Liverpool didn't offer him a chance to come back, so isn't there a suggestion here of betrayal by Liverpool? we offered him a return in 2005, but he chose Newcastle instead. they offered him more money than we did. maybe you should've mentioned that?

We never wanted him back. He let us down a long time ago when he left for Madrid. I never wanted him back from there, i was made up he had an awful time and embarressed himself at Newcastle and now he's an injury prone retard i'm over the moon he's sold his soul to Satan and gone to the scum. The only thing that's nice here is the Mancs all know his first choice wasn't them it was us and we didn't want the injury riddled fecker!

Owen betrayed Liverpool & Benitez when he left, LFC owe him nothing and we hope he is as successful at Man U as he was at Newcastle !

He certainly did betray Liverpool - he did this by prevaricating over his contract renewal, saying that he would sign it "next week", "in a few days", "tomorrow" until he could walk away trousering a massive wage (and no doubt a signing-on fee) from Madrid. He's 29 now, going on 39, and his pace has gone as have his silky finishing skills and determination - no, as a genuine Liverpool fan, I am really pleased that he has gone to Man Utd - rather he went there than Benzema! I'm sure he will form a deadly partnership with that other tremendous Ferguson signing, Berbatov that will guarantee Utd a mid-table finish next season! We are quite happy with our main striker!

....um....what are you talking about, Liverpool didn't offer him a chance to come back? It's common knowledge that when he left Real Madrid to come back to England, he WAS offered a chance to come back to the club by no other than Rafa Benitez himself - the same man for whom he couldn't give a whiff of a chance a year earlier, since he was the new manager, and frankly speaking the same man who didn't really owe him anything at that point. And guess what, Owen turned the chance down, - and just because we couldn't offer him as much money as Newcastle - that's club loyalty for you right there. This considering the fact that he forced Benitez to sell him at lower than his market value to Real, the year before, and then expecting us to buy him a way back for way more than he was worth then. Perhaps you should try actually researching the facts to your stories before you write them to make sure that they actually vibe with reality. And stop making excuses for the guy. Fowler jumped at the chance to return to the club to end his career properly. King Kenny didn't give a second thought to taking what in many cases could be considered to be a ceremonial role. There's a reason why them 2 are Legends and gods in Liverpool Folklore while Owen is a sad cautionary tale of a promising career gone wrong.

As a Liverpool fan I like the article offering another side to the arguement but this is is very similar to Man Utd fans expecting Ronaldo to stay because Ferguson made him the player he is. Owen moved without giving Benitez a chance in 2004, so why should Benitez give Owen a chance now? It just adds to the Wayne Rooney situation!

btw we are happy to see him at manu rather than complaining. look at real madrid and newcastle utd after he joined... as well as liverpool a year after he left.. 2005 CL champ just for your info! we should thank him instead.. he's doing us a big favour

Tarek, you're either under 7 years of age or a tosser. 1. HE LEFT LPOOL AFTER RUNNING DOWN HIS CONTRACT! 2. WE DID OFFER HIM A RETURN IN 20O5 BUT HE WENT TO NEWCASTLE FOR MORE MONEY!

Owen left liverpool for more money, after holding out on contract talks for almost a year, the way he did we newcastle, he then wrote in his biography that he hated man u some much he used to sharpen his studs before playing them. you have not researched your stupid article. poor bloggerrrrr. Why on earth would we have wanted him back. He's well suited to the arrogant man u. Betrayal is not when you will wont take someone back, it's when you leave someone and then are given the chance to come back 12 months later only to join another club because they offer more money. Judas did it to jesus for 50 peices of silver.

this article is typical of the drivel that gets written on this site- i wish it would stop coming up on my rss feed. everyone know michael owen could have gone back to liverpool but bottled it and got everything he deserved. i can't wait to see him get snapped at anfield next season
by eddy on July 05, 2009
he didn't want to play for liverpool anymore. more money and a better chance ( he thought ) to win the champions league were obvious motivations. i hope he enjoyed his time on the bench at madrid while liverpool won the champions league. when he realised he was surplus to requirements he wanted to slope back to us with his tail between his legs but we didn't want him back at nearly twice the price we sold him for so he joined average newcastle. he proved to be an under-achiever there too. i'm glad newcastle were relegated as i'd love to have seen how owen liked playing in the championship. how the mighty have fallen, eh? so, man utd have snapped him up. good for them. it's not as if we wanted or needed him anyway. he's washed up.

If I remember, there was none won in when Owen was with Real Madrid and Newcastle. That's good enough for me. He can stay at old toilet. fact: we did offer him to rejoin liverpool when he left madrid fact: he did choose to walk out on liverpool, just like what mcnannaman did. fact: he did go for money rather than club game opportunities. fact: he cares more about his england chances rather than liverpool's succes

You are completely wrong about Liverpool not trying to re-sign Owen. They did, but Newcastle outbid them because of the money that Madrid still owed NUFC from Woodgate's transfer and Liverpool could not compete financially to bring him back. Furthermore, he already betrayed LFC when he would not give their (then) new manager a chance by staying at Liverpool and signing a new contract; instead he bailed on them with only a year left on his contract, forcing Liverpool to take a measly fee and rubbish player in exchange. Michael Owen has never shown any loyalty to Liverpool. Even when he played for them he still valued playing for England as a higher priority. If Owen wanted to gain any respect back, he would have sucked it up and signed a new contract with Newcastle on a minimal wage to help get them back into the Premiership. After all, Newcastle spent a fortune on his massive wages and he never delivered for them. In my opinion, Owen betrayed both Liverpool and Newcastle and the man will forever be remembered as having no loyalty and no passion. Owen should just retire from his profession, as should the so called 'journalist' who wrote this article. Seriously Tarek, if you cannot remember or be bothered to research facts about the story you are writing then you should quit and stop masquerading as a sports journalist.

Owen did not betray Liverpool by joining Man United. He betrayed Liverpool in 2004 when after promising to sign his record breaking contract he lied and prevaricated until he was months away from a Bosman. Rafa rightly smelled a rat and shipped him out to Spain where he failed. He then took the money again and went to Newcastle where he languished on a treatment table taking money from the Geordie halfwits who for some reason had bid 7 million more than anyone else. At 29 he is reduced to ruining his reputation and legacy by accepting a bit part role for his hated rivals. The next ping of his greedy little tendon will be music to my ears.

Why waste time deliberating about Owen? LFC don't lose anything and Mancs are not likely to gain anything as well. If Real Madrid can let him go, that means he's worth nothing to anybody, not least LFC. He's Mancs' peoblem now, so let's stop wasting time on a has-been!!!

He let Benitez down by not coming back. He chose not to return then, so it is his own fault that Benitez does not want him now. Most LFC fans will think that he did a "he sold his soul to the devil kind of thing (punt intended)" but Liverpool also did not want him back even when he held out for it. Another website suggests he was willing to have 25000pounds only which shows how despo he is. No one betrayed no one. Owen transfered from Newcastle, not a direct from Liverpool. Liverpool did not want him. Owen did not take the earlier opportunity 4yrs ago Benitez literally WATCHED him go to united.
