Burnley's signing of Manchester United youngster Richard Eckersley on a four-year contract gives a glimmer of light to their chances of Premier League survival after their magnificent achievements of last season.

They deserve the reward of winning the play-offs after missing out so harshly on a League Cup final appearance allied to the huge number of games they played.

Full-back Eckersley, 20, has not got a great deal of Premier League experience. Just one appearance, in fact - as a 71st-minute sub against West Brom. But he comes from a club that nurtures top-quality talent and therein lies the key to it all.

The Clarets still need to purchase a couple of Premier League-friendly defenders and then we might be able to give 'em a better than 19-1 chance of survival in the big league!

But hey, let's hope they manage to enjoy a little bit of it - though with the start they've got, it doesn't fill me with much hope that they'll even be able to do that!

Eckersley should be able to do a job in defence for Owen Coyle's men, though. The Salford-born defender might not be ready for a straight-in-every-game role but in time, and I mean just a few months, he should establish himself as a regular in the Burnley side.

Good luck to him and the team and let's just relish those Burnley v Man Utd and Burnley v Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City encounters to come!
