Marcello Lippi spent most of his playing career at Sampdoria, which was fairly unremarkable, particularly compared to his achievements as a manager. His first big break in management were stints at Atalanta and Napoli. He then got a go at Juventus, where he made his name by picking up a plethora of trophies.

Lippi then got asked to coach the Italian national side in 2004. At this time, viewing audiences in Italy were at al- time lows for the Azzurri and on his way to winning the World Cup he was accredited with making the national team popular again.

He resigned after winning the World Cup and has taken time off to consider what he wants to do. At 59, he has said he still feels like he has four or five more seasons before he retires. He has never worked outside Italy and It seems he doesn't intend to leave the country any time soon.

Lippi has said he doesn't want to coach in the Premier League and that he has rejected several offers from abroad. However, he would no doubt want to manage one of the top Italian clubs. With this in mind, AC Milan, Inter and Roma would seem the most likely destinations. Milan have reportedly put a lot of pressure on current manager Carlo Ancelotti to get into the top four this season and if he fails he can say goodbye to the last year of his contract. Lippi has already coached at Inter and might be ready for a spectacular return if owner Massimo Moratti and coach Roberto Mancini come to blows again after years of bickering.

Roma is the last option because manager Luciano Spalleti has yet to renew his current contract, which expires at the end of the season. Wherever he goes, Lippi is likely to win trophies; he is in touch with the tactics and man-management skills required to win at the top level and would be an important member in any club.

Do you think Marcelo Lippi would do well in club management? We would welcome your comments.
