The World Cup was somewhat mediocre, England were outright abysmal and now with that behind us the dawn of a new Premier League season is almost upon us.

Fleet Street's finest  have all been previewing the most eagerly anticipated domestic season in history by hyping up Manchester City's chances of overhauling their great rivals at the summit of the league.

Further hyperbole resonates throughout the column inches of all the nation's broadsheets, tabloids and radio station phone-ins as billions anticipate an assault on the title by the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea while there are those who believe, with Joe Cole on board, that Liverpool may launch a challenge as well.

However, there is one club that everyone seems to have forgotten about. A club that resonates with the very fibre with which this most wonderful of sports is intertwined with. A club with a rich history.

A club which changed the game from a sport of thugs kicking lumps out of each other whilst attempting to transport a medicine ball across a pitch reminiscent of the Somme into what is now universally referred to as "the beautiful game".

Ladies and Gentlemen, that club is Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

It was only a few months ago that Spurs steamrollered into the much-coveted Champions League places against all the odds. But now with all City's mega-spending and the Sky Four strengthening everyone has forgotten about the "tiny totts".

When asked by a journalist in New York what the aim was for the season Harry Redknapp responded "we wanna win the Championship".

Many scoffed but you know what Harry's comment was more than just pie in the sky. Spurs are well armed for an assault on the League title.

They boast an extraordinarily strong squad and have in excess of 2 players for each position. Spurs can boast two world class centre halves in Ledley King and Michael Dawson and this could be the platform for many clean sheets this season.

Gareth Bale has blossomed into a world class left back/left winger whilst there can't be many better midfielders on the planet than the Croatian maestro Luka Modric. If Aaron Lennon can rediscover his pre-injury form he is easily one of the finest orthodox wingers in Europe.

Spurs also have a wealth of young gems anyone of which could explode onto the scene this season.

This season, if two or three could "flip the switch" (as the Americans say) this would further enhance Spurs as a force to be reckoned with. Giovani Dos Santos and Adel Taarabt have all the physical and technical tools to be World Class performers now they just need the application and mental conditioning.

From the look of things, Taarabt's spell on loan at Q.P.R has helped as he dazzled the crowds in New York when Spurs took on the Red Bulls and Sporting Lisbon. And then there is of Andros Townsend, Kyle Walker, Steve Caulker, whizzkid Jon Bostock and Brazlian sensation Sandro Ranieri.

Spurs are also never shy when it comes to the transfer market and neither is Harry Redknapp. A couple of "triffic" signings and Spurs will really be looking the business this season. Of that there is no doubt.

But one other advantage Spurs have over some of the others, and in particular Manchester City, is that of continuity. The vast majority of this squad has been at the club for years and all - besides Sandro - have a wealth of Premier League experience. This will reflect both on and off the pitch.

So whilst City's numerous imports take time to gel and they suffer from much infighting and player unrest, cohesive Spurs will start off like a house on fire.

In closing, what I'm saying to everybody is write off Tottenham Hotspur Football Club at your peril.

Its been 50 years since the Cockerel crowed and it could well be the case that when the year ends in '1' the Spurs will go marching on. Watch out City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool - Harry will have the last laugh!
