Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne has reportedly handed in a transfer request in a bid for regular first team football.

Mancienne is skilful, versatile player who is equally comfortable in midfield or central defence and is likely to have no shortage of suitors.

The 22-year-old Londoner spent last season on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers and he is much admired by their manager Mick McCarthy though he admits he has not yet made any moves to bring him to Molineux on a permanent basis.

“I guess people should ask their manager Carlo Ancelotti whether we should read anything into the transfer request,” said the former Republic of Ireland manager. “If I was reading anything into it, I suggest he wants a transfer! But that's the first I've heard about it. I'm not looking at signings at all at the moment.”

McCarthy also confirmed that Wolves would have to sell before they could buy meaning Mancienne may have to wait till the last days of the transfer window before getting his move.

McCarthy added: “We need to lose some players rather than take any more in and certainly won't do any more business unless anyone leaves.”

Sporting Lisbon and Sevilla are both thought to be interested in signing the Mancienne and, with both offering Europena football, moving abroad might be a more attractive proposition than the Midlands club.
