United’s primary midfield target is Werder Bremen’s Mesut Ozil but they are preparing to go after the Manchester City man should that deal fall through.
Despite being named as City’s player of the year in the 2008/09 season, Ireland rarely featured last season under manager Roberto Mancini who is keen to offload the Irishman.
City have 37 players on their books yet can only submit a total of 25 to their Premier League squad meaning certain players will be looking for pastures new, including Ireland.
Sir Alex Fergsuon is desperate to increase the creativity in his team in a bid to regain the Premier League title and he feels both Ozil and Ireland fit the bill.
Ireland would most probably cost between £8m-£10m and at just 23 years of age it would represent excellent value.
