I sat down one evening to try and compare Dixie Dean's scoring feat relative to the changing conditions over the years. I agree that Dean would not score 60 goals ina season now but how could he compare? I calculated that Dixie Dean scored approx 3.4% of the goals scored in the top division that year when he set the record. I then looked at great goals scoring seasons and found that no other top flight player in the English football has scored more than 3% of the season's goals. In fact to score 3.4% of a Premier League season's goals, Thierry Henri would need some 39 goals a season to compare with Dean nowadays even allowing for the shorter season ie 38 instead of 42 games. I believe Dean only played 38 games anyway that season? I have the full figures which were also publsihed on www.toffeeweb.com.

Seems a pretty fair way of comparing, Brian. Another might be transfer fee cost per goal: Chevchenko cost 10,000 time as much as Dixie...

Wonderful article...it reminded me of the little lad that once was me drinking a lemonade [circa 1955] in the saloon bar of Dixie's pub, while my awestruck father chatted to the great man over a pint or two at the bar. Given their respective achievements, what would Dixie have made of Mr Beckham's deal - announced this very day?

Great article . Dixie cast a giant shadow , and no-one as yet , has has been able to eclipse him .

Delightful article, Ted. A really lovely account of one of your heroes beautifully written. It's hard to see any modern day striker emulating Dixie's goal scoring feats. I remember reading a book about Dixie at school. Joe Morris

Eighteen goals in sixteen games for England - enough said!
