The question remains as to whether Rafa Benitez made the right choice in appointing Steven Gerrard as captain of Liverpool (see Sportingo article).
His loyalty is unquestionable. I know that when speculation about a move in the summer of 2005 started, Gerrard told the fans he wanted time to think his situation over. He wasn't unhappy, though - it's just that he didn't want to rush his decision. In the end, after protracted negotiations, he signed a four-year contract.
Gerrard has been a Liverpool fan all his life and comparisons have been made between him and Chelsea's John Terry. Both players are really good at lifting team spirit - and both talk honestly to their team-mates.
Gerrard's record is impressive - medals from the Champions League, two FA Cups, two League Cups, the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup adorn his sideboard. He is without a doubt the most experienced player in the Liverpool squad . . . yet he is just 26 years of age.
Gerrard is a confident and powerful player - and those qualities have helped to make him the right choice as Liverpool captain.

SG is the best leader Liverpool has, so he should be made captain of his club. But compared across the Premiership, he isn’t as good as JT, which explains why JT is England captain and not SG. Compared against past Liverpool captains, SG doesn’t rank well, nor does he stand up to past championship-winning captains. Loyalty is one thing, but loyalty is not a currency to purchase an armband. Keane was only 3 years at Man U when he was made captain. What made Keane a great captain was his presence – much like Adams had. And certainly SG doesn’t have the organizational abilities of a Terry. My worry (and I think I share the concern of the earlier article) is that even if we ruled out SG, there is no one else who can be captain at Liverpool. That fundamentally goes against Bob Paisley’s idea of having good competition to keep one sharp. SG is, looking at Liverpool, captain by default.
