The question remains as to whether Rafa Benitez made the right choice in appointing Steven Gerrard as captain of Liverpool (see Sportingo article).

His loyalty is unquestionable. I know that when speculation about a move in the summer of 2005 started, Gerrard told the fans he wanted time to think his situation over. He wasn't unhappy, though - it's just that he didn't want to rush his decision. In the end, after protracted negotiations, he signed a four-year contract.

Gerrard has been a Liverpool fan all his life and comparisons have been made between him and Chelsea's John Terry. Both players are really good at lifting team spirit - and both talk honestly to their team-mates.

Gerrard's record is impressive - medals from the Champions League, two FA Cups, two League Cups, the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup adorn his sideboard. He is without a doubt the most experienced player in the Liverpool squad . . . yet he is just 26 years of age.

Gerrard is a confident and powerful player - and those qualities have helped to make him the right choice as Liverpool captain.
