His thought process was reasonably thought through, and Tottenham ended up as the ‘lucky’ winners thanks to their potential and 'not-quite-bandwagon' status.
Predictably, following Spurs’ poor start to the season, the American (and yes, there is a very good reason to qualify that) writer is already suffering a slight tinge of buyer’s remorse,
“So I’ve been slowly getting into the English soccer thing, although I might have picked a lemon — a struggling Spurs team that just got shut out by an Everton team that played a man down for most of the game….Now I’m suffering from buyer’s envy and wishing that I picked Man City, who have the coolest uniforms and stunned Arsenal last weekend with the winning goal coming off an iffy penalty-kick call.”
It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out, as Simmons devoted a considerable amount of his column to this decision back in the summer. Our money is on one of three:
1) Tottenham continue mid-table form and Simmons either switches clubs or never mentions football ever again.2) Tottenham regain their form from last season and Simmons gets a Spurs' crest tattoed on his forehead while changing his column name from ‘Page 2′ to ‘Spurs R #1!!!”3) Simmons suddenly starts supporting West Ham, claiming he’d done as such since the early 60s.
