Bolton lead the charge as ticket prices tumble

After 15 years of inflation-busting price rises and empty wallets for helpless fans, it looks like English football’s exorbitant ticket-price bubble may have finally burst.

Bolton Wanderers have announced a 10 per cent drop in season-ticket prices for next season, and whilst that may not be a massive reduction, it is a step in the right direction - and one that will be welcomed by fans the country over.

The signs that this may happen have been around for a couple of seasons now; reduced-price tickets for Carling Cup games and kids go free schemes at clubs like Charlton suggest that change was bubbling beneath the surface. Even Chelsea, with their £80.2million deficit, announced a price freeze on Premiership tickets next season. These unsustainably-high prices could not continue.

This move can only be good for English football, as ticket pricing has truly got out of control across all four divisions. I pay more to watch my local club Swansea City play poor football in League One, the third tier of English football, than it costs to watch Barcelona, the cream of Spanish football, at the Nou Camp. Surely the fact that it costs more to watch Lee Trundle ply his trade than Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and their teammates indicates something is out of kilter and needed to change.
