Where are we now? I'm deliberately writing this prior to one of the most important periods in the recent history of Tottenham Hotspur. The next week will decide where in the realms of footballing terms our club stand....or will it? Are we capable of becoming one of the elite? If so, how?
The only way is to bring in, nuture and embed young talent into a fighting unit. And that, in my opinion, is the direction in which we are heading. We do not have Chelsea's resources, nor at the moment Arsenal's or Manchester United's pulling power to attract massive household names. But who would you opt for if you were 18 to 20 years old, and had the chance to join a top Premiership side?
Our problem, I feel, will be as was evident in the summer - to hold on to our star names when faced with monopoly money. Once a player's head is turned, it's virtually impossible to keep him. What can the board do when faced with this situation? Nothing other than take the cash and hope that a replacement is fit and able to take the mercenary ba***rd's place.
Something inside tells me that if we are going to win something this year, then our resolve to hold on to players will be tested severely this summer. But there is an apparent kinship about this team, and they really are a joy to watch at present. I put this down down to Martin Jol alone. Sure he has made errors, but football is a game of instant decisions (who knew about Anthony Gardner's injury or Dimitar Berbatov's groin?) Jol is still learning, as are many of the key players, so in essence it is the only way forward for us.
The Spurs board know our limitations and our fans' expectations; they understand what is needed for us to break into the elite of English football. That journey will not happen in the next week, more likely it will take three to four seasons. So keep the faith guys - onwards and upwards, with a possibility of a little turbulence en-route.

Jol is far from being a genius - whats happening now is just papering over the cracks. Yes we have scored 23 goals in the last 7 games but we have also conceeded 12. I am not knocking the resolve or the team spirit - what I am weary of is Jol tactictal ability - we have lost big leads on numerous occassions this season and that is down largely to tactical errors. On Saturday when Tainio was clearly knackered and struggling he decided to leave him on and could have bought on the Hudd to add some stability in the midfield but he failed to see clearly what others could and that aint the first time

Not throwing away leads against Chelsea and Arsenal is a good place to start. P.S. Funny how Berbatov made a miraculous recovery from his supposed groin injury. Not to mention that if he actually had one he would not have been allowed to play on for another 20 minutes.

I don't know if you guys have noticed but currently we are playing the best football we have played in years and as much as you critise MJ for tactical decisions we are on par for a 64 game season and injuries to our key players. How long did it take Ferguson to make MAN USA what they are....Full of **** some of you and a disgrace to spurs fans....OR ARE YOU!!!Keep going MJ....COYS!!!

Martin Jol last season made some costly errors this season he is making different but still costly errors. Such as against Chelsea if he had Berbatov injured why not put another midfielder and make it more difficult for Chelsea rather than getting another defender on and losing the shape of the defence while weakening the midfield where he should be winning the game. Then again he is fortunate as Zokora and Berbatov are playing superbly now, also Jenas will be back fresh on saturday alongside Rocha which should see us win it against Watford besides Spurs won`t lose another game this season.

i can't believe you jol bashers still exist. are you spurs fans or bolton fans? we are finally playing spurs football, no spurs side has entertained like this in my lifetime. even the famous 5 team that had no defence wasn't as much fun to watch, never mind that the quality of our play with berba, lennon and keane is unheard of in the last 20 years at spurs. we're without our main defender and captain(king). loom what happens to chelsea without terry. we just absolutely hammered the champions and most expensive squad ever assembled in england. ok we threw away the lead but we'd played 48 hours before and berba and lennon, injured or not couldn't continue. you lot need to enjoy , get behind jol, get behind the players and stop fukkin moaning

Many so called spurs supporters have said Curbishely and O'neal are better Manager than Jol...and would prefer them than Jol at spurs... oh yeaah!...then I would suggest them to support WestHam or Aston villa with their 'exiting' brand of football...one of them in the championship next season.....Moaners!!!!!!!

Now i agree that Jol is taking us in the right direction and you want to know where i think the problem is? i honestly dont think chris hughton, as great as he is, is up to the task of being assistant manager. The role of assistant manager in the premier league is very important and if your assistant doesnt know what to do, it makes your job even harder. i would like to see us get in an experienced tactician to join jol on the sidelines and thats no disrespect to hughton as i feel jol just needs slight persuasion sometimes. i dont think jol is and idiot as he knows how to handle his players, but i would like to see the king get new advisors
O'Neill done an excellent job with Celtic in a league of two teams, Curbishley never really set the world alight at Charlton and faced with the task he had at West Ham hasn't risen to that either......Under MJ ...Qualified for UEFA through league position....made it through to the last stages of the carling cup.....still if the fa cup.....quarter finals in UEFA and in a good league position....yeah we all prefer Curbishley who we can then look forward to Championship football.....

And Spurs JUST broke their own record, set last week....the First British team that won EIGHT CONSECUTIVE GAMES in Europe...Last week record was seven, which was set up by THE SEXY SPURS UNDER THE MIGHTY JOL

This is one of the best seasons we have had in ages and yet everyone goes on about bad Jol is. Jol like the team is learning all the time. Give them your support. Also the guy who says that Berbatov made a miraculous recovery - have you never felt bad one day and great 2 or 3 days later. What would everyone had said if he really did have a bad injury and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Spurs are now p[laying more like a matured team, good teamwork and plenty of spirit. Forwards need to be more complementary and cooperative with the midfield mor attack orientated. Defence need to buck up esp. Dawson who overdoes his job but creates difficult situations for himself and the team. Anyway great going. After a long time really enjoying the Spurs team.

Thats right, Jol is crap. Whereas I suppose you are some kind of genius who would do a far better job. Especially as you tell us how clear his mistakes are. Here''s a tip: try doing some coaching - start somewhere. The local cubs, whatever. Cos your genius is clearly needed within the English game. Just by watching on Sky you are able to see who is picking up who off the ball, who is marking who from set pieces, who is tracking which runs. Obviously you know all of this, and the plans that were laid out during the preparation, cos you could see so clearly that Hudd would have added some stability to the midfield, and that Tainio was 'obviously knackered'. Its clear, Jol isnt the geius, as you say. You are the genius and I for one hail your powers.
My comment was meant for Andy (below) - I didnt realise this MB would post my comment at the top in the main thread!
