There are three teams realistically in the race for 'Best of the Rest' in the Premiership.

  • Bolton have gone with the small-squad trend by posting solid results for the opening two-thirds of the season, only to stumble as injuries take their toll.
  • Everton have shown consistently decent form for most of the year, neither excelling nor failing to get results for long periods.
  • Tottenham have recovered from their worst losing run in the Premiership to register one of the best scoring runs in the club's history - but only just ahead of the goals they are leaking at the other end.

Bolton's run-in has some tough contests and the matches against Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal away look unwinnable for them. Guessing at draws against Everton and Reading and that they manage to win three of their other four matches (generous for a team that have managed only six points from the last 15, beating only Fulham and Watford), that would take Sam Allardyce's team to a creditable 58 points.

Everton, too, have to face the big three but only Chelsea away from home. The best they can expect on current form, though, would be a draw with Arsenal - although I fail to see it. I say they'll bottle all three. With seven points from the last 15 and wins against Watford and Blackburn, they look only in marginally better shape than Bolton. Considering their run-in opposition I see David Moyes's men taking Charlton and Fulham at home and West Ham away. Portsmouth, even at home, could cause them problems so I put them down for draws with Aston Villa, Bolton and Pompey. The additional 12 points would give them 55 by the end of the season.

Tottenham are a harder case to read. Will Martin Jol's new free-scoring Spurs turn up for the rest of the season or will the scared Tottenham lacking any bottle rear their ugly head? I have decided, as with the other teams, to consider recent form. Their run-in contains both Chelsea and Arsenal. Their form lately suggests they may well take all three points in one of those games but I will say they lose the other.

Of the remaining seven matches they are bound to lose one, perhaps Blackburn, despite red-hot form. I also expect them to draw one: at home to Reading or, more likely, away to Wigan or Middlesbrough later on as injuries take their toll from their extra cup duties. With 19 points from their run-in, I see them with 61 points and most likely contenders for fifth spot.

If you are looking for a dark horse, Blackburn are your men with an easy run-in and a habit of turning up in the top half in recent years.

Jester's predictions for this weekend: Tottenham to beat Watford; Everton to lose to Arsenal; Manchester United to beat Bolton. And for the 2006/2007 Premiership season (38 games): 5. Tottenham 61pts; 6. Bolton 58pts; 7. Everton 55 pts.
