What can I say? I'm in total agreement wif what you've just written there. Insightful piece.
by Andy on April 08, 2007
A great piece but for me selling Sissoko is a no-no, on paper we have the strongest central midfield in Europe if not the World so why do we need to sell? 2 players for each position is Rafa's philosophy and the players seem to accept that.

After a great first season and a fantastic start to this season (before injury)how typical it is of the short sighted, pretend to know it all modern day football blogger (because basically thats all you are!) to write off a 22 year old talented footballer with huge potential because he has not returned to the form he was in before that recent serious shoulder injury he sustained. Macherano after only 5 games has been impressive however hell will freeze over before I terminally judge Momo on his recent form. Before the aformentioned injury Momo was our best player! There not just my words ther the word of Jamie Carragher. 5 games does not break a player or make a player! You sound like all modern day football fans! Think you know it all and are very eager to relay those thoughts to everybody else.

imagine mescherano n sissoko play d holding role.. allowing alonso to roam more upfront.. n with gerrard on the right.. perhaps riise on the left... n crouch up front.. my my.. what a prospect!

As a season ticket holder for nearly 20 years I have seen many a midfielder come and go. i must admit I never saw why everyone was so excited about Momo. Great attitude and spirit but can't time a tackle - gets booked more than 1 in every 3 games he plays. Can't Pass, Head, shoot, take a free kick etc. Mascherano is a different beast altogether - pure class.
by Tom Harness on April 08, 2007
Its nothing to do with his injuries, Momo has never been a great passer of the ball, in his first season we forgave him because he covered so much ground and broke down attacks, but most Liverpool supporters thought he would improve on the passing side of his game, but he has not. Andy is correct it is better to have two players for each position and in the article it says he would improve under Rafa`s guidance, but if it means that Momo going to Barca will bring Eto`o to Anfield instead of Milan or god forbid Chelsea then for the good of the club Momo should be sacrificed. I would not like him to go but Gerrard and Alonso are reaching their career peak so we have to build a team around them now that is capable of winning the prem and Eto`o is a big part of that.

Actually I'm almost sure he will. Nothing to do with buying Eto'O who's willing to leave Spain himself and move to Liverpool. But Villa is still a better option for us. Well, I'd like them both actually :)

Do you think maybe there was another reason why things didnt get going for him. I heard if he played a certain number of games West HAm had to buy him for 25million, was part of the contract.
by squirrel on April 08, 2007
Tevez comes next.. I agree with some guys that there might have been a threshold playtime for payments. I also think that when they arrived they unsettled the other west ham players and they had to sit out the argies to suit the rest.

Pardew and Curbishley are not stupid. You forgot to mention that Mascherano had the benefit of seven months' worth of acclimation to the Premiership, with a few games, a lot of watching and a lot of training before his arrival at Liverpool. During his few starts early on for the Hammers his passes went astray and he looked bewildered. A struggling team could not afford on the job training at defensive midfield.
by josh on April 08, 2007
Isn't it clear that West Ham would obviously have had to pay a significant amount more for Mashcerano if he were to make a certain number of appearances for the club? It is perhaps true that, given West Ham's increasingly perilous situation the managers did not want to upset the team spirit by introducing Mascherano - but the monetary factor was surely the defining reason. Liverpool were much more able to afford the fee and Mascherano became a hot potato after the investigation into his transfer.
How many did he make for West Ham, a total of five, some as a sub, so your argument of a big fee once he reached a number of games does not defend West Hams stupidity, if a clause like this was in his contract he should have played the maximum amount of games before the big money payment came in, and im sure if it exists the clause allows for a lot more than five games.
by Paulo Di on April 08, 2007
Not when the fee was going to someone who at the time of the two "transfers" was vying to take over West Ham. He at the time thought he had a great deal in the offing - shame for him that neither came off, and best thing that could have happened to West Ham. Kia J (or whatever he was called) would have been a nightmare owner. The Egg will see West Ham through ok.

Selling Momo is not an option, Liverpool have 2 of the best defensive midfielders in the world and Etto is 1 of a list of forwards that would be a beneficial purchase for LFC, its not worth the sacrifice, what happens when masher has a loss of form or injury, do we find ourselves saying why did benitez sell Momo? Benitez is looking to improve the squad, to sell Momo would be a step back.
by andrewufo on April 09, 2007
anyone know how much we paid? Free Transfer? or 10 million?
by james gilroy on April 09, 2007
you lot who are saying liverpool should sell sissoko are fools sissoko is 22 and has huge potential the is already a great player hence barcelona wanting him he was the best player when we played barca and offers an energy and physical and aerial presence that mascherano does not offer all he needs to his game is goals may i also say mascherano does not get goals either you fans are quick to praise and quick to critiscise hypocrites
by ollick on April 09, 2007
I would be cautious about selling Sissoko too soon, we only have Mascherano for next season, after that we have to buy him and that could be very expensive, upwards of 15 million. If we were to sell Sissoko as part of a deal that brought Eto to Liverpool we would be running the risk of being held to ransom to keep Mascherano or losing him (to United, Chelsea, Barca, Milan) and having to rely on Benitez to find another gem. Keep them both or potentially let Sissoko go out on a loan (but I think that's crazy)
by Disco Dan on April 09, 2007
I heard he didn't play because of the way his deal was set up with West Ham. If he played so many games they would have to make a large pay out that they couldn't afford.
by Hysteria on April 09, 2007
we didn't sign Mascherano, we just got him on loan for 1.5M till end of season 2008!! good article but need more correct info! cheers!
by Ross on April 10, 2007
I think it is just bias ! Pardew doesn't need him as he thought that he has better players in midfield or it is just that " I hate Argies " mentality.
by Yardbird on April 10, 2007
Rumour was that Mascherano's contract at WH was a pay as you play deal...? The figure being touted around was £50,000 per game... I doubt even Liverpool would have signed him in that kind of deal, but it does reveal the underlying motive for him coming to the Premiership and it was nothing to do with loyalty to any one club...
by bing Co on April 12, 2007
This is an excellent piece about Mascherano. I completely agree with the writer that Mascherano is a world class talent who deserved respect by the coaches at West Ham. I have always thought that Pardew is among the many people in England who do not like foreign football players.
by Tom Harness on April 12, 2007
Yardbird put an end to these rumours now, he was brought to West Ham to showcase his skills so he could be sold on to one of the bigger European clubs, there was no huge fee involved if he played, his owners wanted him to play to show how good he is, the plan came unstuck when West Ham thought they were better off with the players they had....one of the the biggest lost opportunity stories in the history of the premiership.
