I dreaded it happening - but it has. The spectre of Jose Mourinho cleaning up just about every trophy in the business in the space of a couple of weeks is suddenly very much alive and gloating.

Manchester United’s draw against Middlesbrough means that the team hated by every fan in the game (bar Chelsea supporters, that is) now have the destiny of the Quadruple - Premiership, FA Cup, Carling Cup and Champions League - in their own hands.

In other words, United - until yesterday hot favourites to wrest the league title from The Special One - are finally out of the driving seat for the league title and Mourinho's men powering towards a unique football pinnacle.

'Surely it can’t be good for football to see a team assembled by virtue of the fattest cheque book in football winning every competition they enter?'

We can go on for ever about whether Fergie’s boys have blown up domestically (four points dropped against Portsmouth and now Boro). But the reality now is that if they lose at Stamford Bridge on May 9, and Chelsea win their other remaining fixtures against Newcastle, Bolton, Arsenal and Everton, then smooth operator Mourinho will complete a hat-trick of back-to-back Premiership title wins.

That alone will be enough for Jose to remind the world how special he is. If his team also dump United in the FA Cup Final and then snaffle the Champions League, which is very much a possibility, then expect God to vacate his throne beyond the Pearly Gates for the true Messiah.

OK, if Chelsea take the lot, then the rest of us can only look on in awe and concede they are the best side in the business. But I can’t think of anything worse for the game.

Surely it can’t be good for football to see a team assembled by virtue of the fattest cheque book in football winning every competition they enter? What will it prove - that anyone can buy success?

English football is already polarised into a Big Four and the rest. If it narrows to a Big One, then the rest might as well pack it in and leave Chelsea to compete in a league of their own.

Now what the game really needs is for United to win the Premiership and Liverpool the Champions League. Then, no matter who wins the FA Cup, three teams will have shared the glory in 2006-07. England will be kings of European club football - and everyone will be happy.

Apart from Arsenal fans and the supporters of every club outside the Roman Abramovich, Malcolm Glazer, George Gillett inner circle, that is.
