Newcastle were left stunned as two late Fulham goals snatched victory at St James Park. It was a scoreline that left Newcastle fans in disbelief as they looked to have done enough to secure victory. Newcastle should even have had the game wrapped up before Brian McBride found the net.

Exactly one year ago Newcastle played this same fixture and the home fans were anticipating Michael Owen's debut. This time Obafemi Martins was the debutant but the Nigerian was unimpressive.

Shola Ameobi forced a good save from Antti Niemi in the first half, as Newcastle rarely troubled the Fulham goal and after 32 minutes Fulham's Jimmy Bullard was forced to come off after a clash with Scott Parker. Damien Duff tested Niemi just before half time before Stephen Carr's shot went just over.

At the other end Shay Given had to keep out a Franck Queudrue free kick in the first minute but otherwise remained untroubled. Martins had done better in the opening stages of the second half, but after being fed through by Belozoglu Emre he dragged a shot well wide of the goal. At the other end and Wayne Routledge was given a sight of goal, but his shot was deflected over the bar by Peter Ramage.

Newcastle went ahead when Emre curled in a free kick and Scott Parker's downward header beat Niemi.  Two minute later Charles N'Zogbia should have doubled it as Ameobi and the inspirational Scott Parker sliced Fulham open.

Fulham tried to fightback but often found themself undone by Parker. Martins made way in the second half for new loan signing Giuseppe Rossi to make his debut. With 11 minutes remaining Newcastle replaced Scott Parker and it was at this point that Fulham now were to stun the hosts. Wayne Routledge collected a pass at the end of the box, a slip from Peter Ramage allowed Routledge to get a cross along the goal, the ball flew past four Newcastle players for McBride to score.

And three minutes later Fulham snatched the win as a corner found its way to Carlos Bocanegra to score.

After the game Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder said: "We gifted them the game. For 80 minutes I thought we were worth the lead but a couple of minutes of madness has cost us the points."

Fulham's Chris Coleman said: "We have come away with three points, but we've got to admit that on the balance of play we are a bit fortunate."
